Type Rating Training Map: 58 Centres Worldwide
Looking for an A320, 737, ATR or Dash 8 type rating? This map shows 58 training centres run by 23 organisations in 31 countries, from BAA Training, CAE and Lufthansa Aviation Training to the Airbus, Boeing and ATR campuses, with the aircraft types each one says it trains, the approvals it states and where to send an enquiry. Filter by aircraft type, region or country, then check the details with the centre itself.
Markers sit at city level; a number means several centres in one city. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors; the map tiles load from the OpenStreetMap servers. Skip to the list.
All 58 centres by country
Each entry lists the aircraft types the organisation says it trains at that centre, the approvals it states, its official page and the enquiry route it publishes. "FFS" is a full flight simulator. Where a centre trains mostly for airlines, ask whether it takes individual pilots.
Request a quote from the centres that show the button on their card: one short form, free and without obligation. v1prep sends it to the centre, which answers you directly.

What a type rating involves
A type rating adds one aircraft type, or a family such as the A320 or the 737, to your licence. Under EASA Part-FCL it is taken on an approved course at an approved training organisation (ATO) and ends in a skill test; the FAA equivalent is the practical test for a type rating. Most airliner courses have four parts:
- Theory. Systems, limitations, performance and procedures, usually a mix of computer-based training and classroom days, closed by a technical exam.
- Procedures training. Flows, checklists and FMS work in a fixed-base trainer or flight training device before the full flight simulator.
- Full flight simulator (FFS) sessions. Normal, abnormal and emergency procedures flown as a two-pilot crew, then the skill test with an examiner, normally in a Level C or D simulator of the type.
- Base training. Take-offs and landings in the real, empty aeroplane, unless the course is approved for zero flight time training (ZFTT) and you meet its experience requirements. Centres often price base training separately.
Under EASA rules the rating is valid for one year and is revalidated by a proficiency check. It makes you legally able to fly the type, not ready to fly it for an airline: the operator then adds its own conversion course and line flying under supervision (LIFUS). The Library covers the rules in Class and Type Ratings and the airline side in Airline Pilot Training: Conversion, Line Training and Checks.
Self-sponsored or airline-sponsored
Many airlines hire first officers without a type rating and put them through their own course, sometimes with a training bond or a salary deduction. Others, often smaller operators, ACMI carriers and crewing agencies, ask for a current rating and hours on type. A self-sponsored rating can open those doors, but it is a large sum spent without a guaranteed seat, and a rating with no line experience loses value with every month it goes unused.
So work backwards from the job. Check which airlines are recruiting on the type and whether they want a rating or provide one: the airline pilot jobs board tracks who is hiring, and several cadet programmes include the rating in the package. The Library article on airline selection explains what the assessments test.
How to compare training centres
- Approval. The centre should say which authority approved it and for which course: EASA (through a national authority), UK CAA, FAA, GCAA, DGCA and so on. A rating gained under one system is not automatically valid under another, so match the course to the licence you hold.
- Simulator. Ask for the qualification level (C or D), the exact variant (A320ceo or neo, 737 NG or MAX, ATR 72-500 or -600) and whether the skill test is flown on the same device. Flight Simulators Explained sets out what FFS, FTD and ZFTT mean.
- What the price includes. Theory, the number of FFS hours and whether they are per pilot or per crew, a crew partner if you arrive alone, the skill test and examiner fee, base training, licence fees and accommodation. Base training in the aircraft is often the largest extra.
- Line training. Some centres sell type rating packages with LIFUS at a partner airline. Ask how many sectors, with which operator, under what contract, and who holds your money if the airline pulls out.
- Job placement claims. Treat "guaranteed interview" or "placement support" as marketing until you have the details in writing: which airlines, how many of last year's graduates were hired, and what happens if the airline stops recruiting.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Is the course approved for my licence authority, and who enters the rating in my licence?
- Which simulator, which variant, which level, and where is it located?
- How many simulator hours do I fly as pilot flying, and who is my crew partner?
- Is base training included? Where, when, and what happens if weather or the aircraft delays it?
- What do extra sessions or a skill test retest cost?
- What are the next course dates, and what is the refund policy if the course moves?
- Can I speak to two or three recent graduates?
Common questions
What is a type rating? A qualification added to a pilot licence for one aircraft type or family, such as the Airbus A320 family or the Boeing 737. It is needed for multi-pilot aeroplanes and other complex types, is gained on an approved course that ends in a skill test, and under EASA rules is valid for one year, after which a proficiency check revalidates it.
How long does a type rating course take? Several weeks full time for an airliner. As two examples from this map, Simtech Aviation describes its A320 course as a 10-day ground school followed by 40 hours of simulator training, and Cockpit4u puts its Boeing 737 course at about six weeks. Base training in the aeroplane, if the course needs it, comes after the skill test.
Should I pay for a type rating myself? Only after checking who is hiring on that type and on what terms. Many airlines train new first officers on their own course; others want a current rating. A self-sponsored rating with no job to follow loses value with every month it is not used, so ask the airlines you are aiming at before you commit.
Can I get an EASA type rating outside Europe? Yes, where the training organisation holds EASA approval for that course. Several centres on this map outside Europe state EASA approval, including Etihad Aviation Training, Gulf Aviation Academy, FSTC and BAA Training Vietnam. Check that the approval covers the exact course and ask which authority will enter the rating in your licence.
Does v1prep recommend any of these centres? No. v1prep has no commercial link with any centre on this map and receives nothing for listing them. The list is compiled from the organisations' own websites and press releases; check every detail with the centre.
Data: type-rating-centres.json, 58 centres, checked 29 September 2026.
