Airline Cadet Pilot Programmes 2026: 79 Airlines With a Route From Zero Hours
A cadet programme is the only way into an airline before you hold a licence — and at some airlines (Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Malaysia Airlines) it is the only way in at all. Of the 121 airlines on our jobs board, 79 publish a cadet, ab-initio, MPL or career-pathway route. They range from fully funded (British Airways’ Speedbird Pilot Academy, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines) to €135,000 self-funded with an airline logo on the brochure. 16 of them are for the airline’s own nationals.
Three kinds of cadet programme. Sponsored: the airline pays and bonds you (BA Speedbird, Cathay, SIA, Air France Cadet, Aer Lingus FPP). Part-sponsored: you pay a share or a discounted price (Wizz Air Pilot Academy, Ryanair Future Flyer, Brussels Airlines MPL at €99,500, Iberia Cadetes at 50%). Self-funded with placement: you pay the school, the airline promises a selection or a seat (IndiGo INR 70–80 lakh, AirAsia MYR 250,000, ITA Airways €135,000, JetBlue Gateway Select, easyJet Generation, Jet2FlightPath, American Cadet Academy). The word “cadet” on its own tells you nothing about who pays.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Sponsored, part-sponsored, self-funded: what the words mean
Sponsored means the airline pays the school. It never means free: you sign a training bond (SIA: seven years from your appointment as First Officer; Qatar Airways cadets: five years) and you repay some or all of the cost if you leave early or fail. Air France’s cadet contract ends “without penalty” on failure, but its own FAQ leaves the direction of the reimbursement unclear — read the contract, not the brochure.
Part-sponsored means a discount, a loan or a deferred payment plan against the airline’s guarantee of a seat. Wizz Air’s WAPA, Ryanair’s Future Flyer Academy (entered at Gateway 0, 1 or 2 depending on what you already hold) and Iberia Cadetes (50% financed, repaid from salary) are the European models.
Self-funded with placement is a school course with an airline selection at the end. The airline’s commitment varies from a conditional job offer (IndiGo, AirAsia) to an interview (Jet2FlightPath, easyJet’s partner schools) to nothing more than preferential consideration. €100,000–€135,000 in Europe, INR 70–80 lakh in India, about USD 125,000 at JetBlue Gateway Select. Ask precisely what happens if you pass the course and fail the airline’s final selection.
The catch in every cadet contract
- Nationality. Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Saudia, flynas and Kuwait Airways run national cadet schemes; Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, EgyptAir and Aeromexico take their own citizens; Air France and Transavia France want EEA or Swiss nationals; Brussels Airlines an EU passport plus French or Dutch. The programme is public; the door may not be.
- Intakes are windows, not doors. Air France’s 2026 cadet window ran 15 June to 31 July; ITA Airways selected in July for an October start; Malaysia’s closed 16 January; TUI cancelled its 2026 MPL intake outright; Aer Lingus has not announced one. Miss the window and you wait a year.
- Language. Lufthansa’s European Flight Academy wants German at C1 unless you are a native speaker; Finnair wants fluent Finnish; KLM wants Dutch at B2 before selection; SWISS German at B2; Widerøe a Scandinavian language.
- The MPL trap. A Multi-Crew Pilot Licence is tied to the airline that trained you. Lose the job before you convert it and you hold a licence few other airlines accept.
- Base and fleet are the airline’s call. KLM assigns Second or First Officer and fleet on joining; Ryanair cadets take a base “throughout Europe”; Wizz places you where the aircraft are.
- Failure costs. Some contracts write off training on failure, some invoice it. The number is in the contract, never in the advert.
Common questions
Which airlines have fully sponsored cadet programmes? British Airways (Speedbird Pilot Academy, about £100,000 per cadet, up to 160 places in 2026), Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines (7-year bond), Air France (cadet window closed for 2026), Aer Lingus (Future Pilot Programme, no 2026 intake announced), KLM Flight Academy, Lufthansa’s European Flight Academy and the Gulf national schemes are the sponsored or largely sponsored routes on our board.
How much does a cadet pilot programme cost? Self-funded routes run about €100,000 to €135,000 in Europe (Brussels Airlines €99,500, ITA Airways €135,000), INR 70–80 lakh in India (IndiGo), MYR 250,000 at AirAsia and about USD 125,000 at JetBlue Gateway Select. Sponsored routes cost nothing up front but bond you for five to seven years.
Can a foreigner join an airline cadet programme? Sometimes. Cathay Pacific’s cadet scheme has been open to Mainland applicants since 2023, and Ryanair and Wizz Air take EU nationals broadly, but 16 of the 79 programmes on our board are restricted to the airline’s own nationals or citizens, and most European flag-carrier schemes need EU/EEA citizenship and the local language.
Is an MPL as good as an ATPL? For the airline that trained you, yes. For everyone else, less so: an MPL is issued for multi-crew operations with that operator, and converting it to a CPL/IR if you lose the job costs time and money. Integrated ATPL routes keep more doors open.
Do I need a degree for a cadet programme? Rarely in Europe (secondary school with maths and physics is typical), often in Asia (Thai Airways and Philippine Airlines want a bachelor’s; Malaysia accepts SPM credits or a diploma). US pathway programmes such as United Aviate and JetBlue Gateway University are built around college.
