Direct Entry Captain Jobs 2026: 33 Airlines Hiring Captains From Outside

33 airlines taking Captains51 never doUpdated 29 September 2026From the v1prep jobs board

Most airlines make their Captains, they do not hire them. Of the 121 airlines on our jobs board, 51 publish no external Captain route at all — every US major among them — while 33 are taking Captain applications from outside today. They cluster where fleets grow faster than seniority lists: the Gulf, Asia, Africa, and Europe’s low-cost carriers.

Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

What direct-entry Captain minimums look like

Airlines that never hire Captains from outside (51)

At these airlines command is a seniority event. You join as a First Officer — or as a Second Officer or Relief Pilot on long-haul — and wait your turn: two to four years at a fast-growing US low-cost carrier, five to eight at a European flag carrier, ten or more at KLM, Widerøe or the Japanese majors. A 10,000-hour Captain from another airline starts at the bottom of the same list.

The pattern is clean: the bigger the union and the older the seniority list, the closer the Captain door. It opens at start-ups (Riyadh Air), at carriers whose growth outruns their upgrades (Ryanair, Wizz, IndiGo’s neighbours), at contract-based operators (Vietnam Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, the Chinese majors) and wherever a fleet type has no internal pipeline of First Officers to promote.

Common questions

Which airlines hire direct entry Captains? 33 of the 121 airlines on our board were taking Captain applications or holding a Captain pool at the last check, including Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, Riyadh Air, Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, SAS, Jet2, Eurowings, Lufthansa City Airlines, Air Astana, Vietnam Airlines, Air India Express, Akasa, Ethiopian, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, Oman Air and Azul.

How many hours do you need to be a direct entry Captain? Typically 3,000 to 7,000 hours total, with 1,000 to 2,000 hours in command; rated streams add 500 to 1,500 hours in command on the type. Europe’s low-cost carriers sit at the low end (3,000–3,500), the Gulf at the high end (5,000–7,000).

Can I join a US airline as a Captain? Not at the majors, the cargo carriers or JetBlue: none publishes an external Captain route, and command is by seniority. Some regionals do: Endeavor Air and Piedmont advertised direct-entry Captain routes at the last check; check the individual carrier.

Do airlines hire non-type-rated Captains? Yes. Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, SAS, Air Astana, flynas, Loganair and Lufthansa City Airlines all publish non-type-rated Captain streams, usually with a bonded type rating.

Is there an age limit for direct entry Captains? Often, outside Europe: flynas under 54, Air Astana 55 or 62 depending on the stream, Ethiopian and Korean Air under 60, Riyadh Air under 59. European airlines apply the ICAO 65 limit for commercial flying rather than a hiring cap.
