Edelweiss Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
Edelweiss’s direct-entry routes are for type-rated Airbus pilots only, all based in Zurich. At the last check, on 29 September 2026, its cockpit vacancies page and two postings on the Lufthansa Group careers portal appeared in search results, Direct Entry First Officer A350 and Direct Entry First Officer A320 with a fast track to the A350, though we could not read the portal itself or confirm that both are still open. The rating is the gate: an A320 rating with at least 1,000 hours on type, or an A330, A340 or A350 rating with a valid EASA ATPL, and the A320 posting offers pilots with at least 1,800 hours on the A320 an accelerated conversion to the A350. Edelweiss also asks for fluent German at C1, with the certificate submitted with the application, good conversational English at B2 or ICAO Level 4, and the last five years of your career fully documented, and it takes applications only through the Lufthansa Group portal. Captains have a route too: a Direct Entry Freelance Commander A350 vacancy, posted on 29 January 2026, was live on the Lufthansa Group portal when it was read on 25 August 2026, and job-board copies ask for an EASA ATPL, about 5,000 hours with about 1,500 in command, the A350 rating and at least three years in command, on a freelance contract. An ab-initio route is described in a factsheet whose terms we could not capture.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

What we found at the last check: Edelweiss’s cockpit vacancies page and two Direct Entry First Officer postings on the Lufthansa Group portal, on the A350 and on the A320 with a fast track to the A350, were in search results on 29 September 2026. A freelance A350 Commander vacancy was live on the portal when it was read on 25 August 2026.
How we checked
Edelweiss’s cockpit vacancies page (flyedelweiss.com) and two of its postings on the Lufthansa Group career portal — “Direct Entry First Officer A350 (100%)” and “Direct Entry First Officer A320 (100%) – Fast Track Möglichkeit auf A350” — appeared in search results on 29 September 2026. The A320 posting offers pilots with at least 1,800 hours on the A320 an accelerated conversion to the A350. Not read directly on the portal. The Lufthansa Group portal, read directly on 25 August 2026 for our Lufthansa entry, also listed Edelweiss’s “Direct Entry Freelance Commander A350” (posted 29 January 2026); job-board copies ask for an EASA ATPL, about 5,000 hours with about 1,500 in command, the A350 type rating and at least three years in command, on a freelance basis.
Requirements, as published
| Requirement | As published by the airline |
|---|---|
| Licence | EASA Part-FCL ATPL for applicants rated on the A330/A340/A350 |
| Minimum hours | Not published beyond the on-type figures; 1,800 h on the A320 for the A350 fast track; about 5,000 h with about 1,500 h in command for the freelance A350 Commander (as relayed by job boards) |
| Hours on type | A320 type rating with at least 1,000 h on type, or an A330/A340/A350 type rating with a valid ATPL |
| Type rating | Required — Airbus |
| English | Good conversational English, B2 / ICAO Level 4 |
Reading the requirements line by line
- An Airbus rating, held now. The type rating is required: an A320 rating with at least 1,000 hours on type, or an A330, A340 or A350 rating with a valid EASA ATPL, and the A350 rating for the freelance Commander vacancy. A pilot rated only on a Boeing or an Embraer does not meet any of the postings as published, whatever the hours.
- The A350 fast track. The A320 posting offers pilots with at least 1,800 hours on the A320 an accelerated conversion to the A350. Between 1,000 and 1,800 hours on type, an A320 pilot meets the on-type minimum without that offer.
- German at C1, certified at application. Fluent German at C1 is required, and the certificate goes in with the application, not later. English is the lower bar: good conversational English, B2 or ICAO Level 4.
- Five years on paper. The last five years of your career must be fully documented, with employment certificates and diplomas.
- One way in. Applications go only through the Lufthansa Group portal, at be-lufthansa.com/edelweiss.
Three things a pilot would want to know were not confirmed at our last check: the right-to-work wording, any bond or type-rating cost terms, and whether both postings are still open. Ask Edelweiss about all three before you rely on them.

Selection process

How to prepare
Edelweiss lists a half-day A320 simulator session on its assessment day, so the A320 bank is the core preparation for every applicant; a pilot rated on the A330, A340 or A350 should revise the A320 before the day, since the session is on a different type from their own. The same day includes group exercises, psychometrics, psychological interviews and apparatus tests, so practise timed aptitude tests well before the invitation, with the ATPL theory banks for the knowledge behind them. Do the paperwork first: the German C1 certificate goes in with the application, and the last five years of your career must be fully documented with employment certificates and diplomas, so collect them for every employer in that period before you apply.
For the interview itself, read the complete airline pilot interview guide, and for the assessment day the Library’s pilot aptitude tests and airline simulator assessment. For the A320 session, see the top 50 A320 interview questions. SWISS, which also recruits in Zurich, has a page of its own: SWISS pilot requirements. Check Edelweiss’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Researched on 29 September 2026 from search-engine results of the airline’s own careers pages, job postings and industry job boards — not from a direct read of the portal. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Whether both postings are still open — neither showed a closing date, and the A350 posting mentioned operator conversion courses from spring 2026
- Right-to-work wording
- Bond or type-rating cost terms
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.
