Low-Hour Pilot Jobs 2026: 24 Airlines That Take First Officers Under 500 Hours

The 1,500-hour wall is an American rule, not a global one. Of the 121 airlines on our jobs board, 24 publish a First Officer or Second Officer entry point at 500 hours or less — 3 of them with no hours minimum at all. Almost all are in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and almost all replace the hours with something else: a frozen ATPL, a selection process, multi-crew time, or a bond on the type rating.

Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

No published minimum: selection is the filter (3)

No number does not mean no bar. Air France runs one of the hardest selections in Europe and asks for no total time at all; the cadet-only carriers take you with zero hours because they will train you from scratch and bond you for it. Read the entry route, not the hours column.

Up to 250 hours (12)

This is cadet-level entry for pilots who already hold the licence: a fresh CPL/IR with ATPL theory, sometimes an MCC or MPL. The airline provides or arranges the type rating, and you should expect a bond.

251 to 500 hours (9)

The most common European band. Note the qualifier on the hours: many of these want the time on multi-crew or CS-25 aircraft, not 500 hours of instructing in a single-engine piston.

Why the USA is different

Since 2013 an FAA airline First Officer needs an ATP certificate, and the ATP needs 1,500 hours. 19 of the 21 US and Canadian airlines with a published figure on our board sit at 1,000 hours or above (the exceptions: Envoy Air, United States, at 750 hours; Jazz Aviation (Air Canada Express), Canada, at 500 hours), and none of the US majors goes below the rule. The reductions that exist are the Restricted ATP: 1,250 hours with an aviation associate degree, 1,000 hours with an aviation bachelor’s, 750 hours for military pilots. SkyWest, Envoy and the other regionals hire at those R-ATP levels; the majors then hire from the regionals.

So an American low-hours career runs through instructing, banner towing, Part 135 or a university programme until 1,500 hours — or through a cadet pathway such as United Aviate, American’s Cadet Academy, Delta Propel or JetBlue Gateway, which fix the sequence in advance but do not waive the hours. A European pilot with a frozen ATPL and 250 hours is employable at home and unemployable at a US airline; the reverse is also true, because the FAA ATP is not an EASA licence. Pick the market before you pick the school.

How to read a low-hours vacancy

Common questions

Can I get an airline job with 250 hours? Yes, outside North America. 15 airlines on our board publish an entry point at 250 hours or below, including Cathay Pacific’s Second Officer route, Wizz Air’s cadet-level First Officer, Jet2’s Second Officer, IndiGo’s Junior First Officer and Aegean’s non-rated First Officer. Each replaces the hours with a licence and selection requirement.

Which airlines hire pilots with 200 hours? Airlines whose published minimum is at or below 200 hours include Air France (no minimum), Wizz Air (140 h cadet-level), Jet2 (100 h Second Officer), Aegean (70 h PIC), IndiGo (about 200 h Junior First Officer) and Ryanair’s cadet stream. Check the current status of each on the jobs board.

Do US airlines hire below 1,500 hours? Only under the Restricted ATP: 1,250 hours with an aviation associate degree, 1,000 hours with an aviation bachelor’s degree, or 750 hours for military pilots. US regional airlines hire at those levels; the majors effectively do not.

What is a frozen ATPL? A European CPL with multi-engine instrument rating and all 13 ATPL theory exams passed. It “unfreezes” into a full ATPL once you log 1,500 hours including 500 hours multi-pilot. It is the standard entry licence for European airlines.

Do I need a type rating with low hours? Usually not — most low-hours routes provide the rating, often against a bond. A few, such as Air India’s A320 co-pilot posting, require the rating and hours on type, which makes them experienced-pilot routes despite the small number.
