Qatar Airways Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process

Cadet onlyF/O: Cadet route onlyCaptain: Not recruitingChecked 25 August 2026

Qatar Airways had no mainline direct-entry First Officer or Captain vacancy on its careers portal when we last read it on 25 August 2026, so for now it publishes no hours, licence, age or medical requirement for those seats; its last campaigns asked for 1,000 hours of multi-crew jet time. The one mainline route with a live page is the sponsored Cadet Pilot Training Programme, open only to Qatari nationals or the children of a Qatari mother, which ends in an MPL and a five-year commitment as First Officer. Elsewhere in the Group, Qatar Executive was recruiting type-rated BD-700 Captains from 5,000 hours. Every Qatar Airways pilot is based in Doha.

Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Is Qatar Airways hiring pilots now?

Cadet only at the last check on 25 August 2026 — First Officer seat: Cadet route only; Captain seat: Not recruiting. No mainline direct entry vacancy as of 25 Aug 2026; cadet route Qatari nationals only

What the airline’s own material showed: Re-checked live on the airline's own Avature careers portal on 25 August 2026. The 'Pilots & Flight Operations' job family returns exactly four live roles, none of them a mainline flight-deck job: Type Rated Captain - Qatar Executive BD700 (ref 240000AB, posted 07-04-2026, closes 30-11-2026), Helicopter Captain AW189 (ref 2600008V, posted 23-08-2026, closes 06-09-2026), Helicopter Captain AW139 (ref 2600008W, posted 23-08-2026, closes 06-09-2026) and a Senior Pilot Selection Assessor recruiter role (ref 235423, posted 11-08-2026, closes 25-08-2026). There is NO Direct Entry First Officer and NO Direct Entry Captain vacancy for mainline Qatar Airways, and the former direct-entry job URL (Type Rated First Officer Airbus, /JobDetail/Type-Rated-First-Officer-Airbus/49481) was confirmed by direct request to return HTTP 404. The Cadet Pilot Training Programme page (ref 250000KA, Qatari nationals only) still loads on the airline's own domain, but IMPORTANT CAVEAT: it did not appear in the Pilots & Flight Operations job-family listing, and no posting or closing date could be confirmed from the page itself - a job-detail page can stay reachable by direct URL after it stops being advertised. Treat even the cadet route as 'page live, open status unconfirmed'. The 'cadet-only' status therefore rests on a firmly verified negative (no mainline direct entry vacancy exists today) plus a partially verified positive (the cadet advert page loads). UPDATE September 2026 (our study-guide research, September 2026, citing Reuters): the remaining A330s were permanently retired, a group of pilots — some of whom had not flown commercially since the war began — was seconded voluntarily and short-term to RwandAir, and the airline announced 138 new aircraft over five years.

Why there is no campaign in 2026

The closed door follows the airline’s year rather than a published change of policy, and the dates matter if you are planning around it.

Our reading: an airline lending pilots to another carrier has more pilots than flying today, so new direct-entry seats depend on the new aircraft arriving. Qatar Airways has said nothing about when it will recruit again. It keeps the machinery running: in August 2026 it advertised a Senior Pilot Selection Assessor for its flight-deck recruitment team, a recruiter post rather than a pilot vacancy. Meanwhile, the other Gulf carriers on our jobs board, as recorded at each airline’s last check:

Requirements, as published

RequirementAs published by the airline
LicenceMAINLINE DIRECT ENTRY (First Officer and Captain): Not published - there is no live mainline direct entry advert on Qatar Airways' own site, so the airline currently publishes no licence requirement for these roles. Do not assume the requirements from previous campaigns still apply; see 'unverified'. CADET: no licence required on entry; cadets graduate with a Multi-Crew Pilot Licence (MPL) - published on Qatar Airways' own cadet programme page. QATAR EXECUTIVE Type Rated Captain BD-700 (live advert, read directly from the airline's own portal on 25 Aug 2026): valid ATPL (ICAO / EASA / FAA), and hold or have held an Instrument Rating, plus a valid and current BD-700 type rating.
Minimum hoursMAINLINE: Not published. Qatar Airways publishes no total-hours figure for Direct Entry First Officer or Direct Entry Captain because no such vacancy is open. Figures circulating on job boards (commonly '1,000 hours') are NOT currently published by the airline and were not confirmable in this check - see 'unverified'. QATAR EXECUTIVE Type Rated Captain BD-700 (live advert, verified directly on the airline's own site 25 Aug 2026): minimum 5,000 hours total flight time on aeroplane, minimum 2,000 hours on jet aircraft, minimum 1,500 hours as PIC on multi-crew jet aircraft. Simulator time does not count.
Hours on typeMAINLINE: Not published - no live vacancy, so no on-type minimum is published for Direct Entry First Officer or Captain. QATAR EXECUTIVE Type Rated Captain BD-700 (live advert, verified 25 Aug 2026): minimum 500 hours on the BD-700 type; recency requirement is last flight on jet aircraft within the past 12 months.
Type ratingMAINLINE: Not published. Whether a type rating is required, provided, or bonded for mainline direct entry is not stated anywhere on Qatar Airways' own live site, because no mainline direct entry advert is open. CADET: training is provided as a scholarship; per the airline's own cadet page the cadet is contractually obliged to serve a minimum of five years with Qatar Airways after completing the Final Line Check and being appointed First Officer. QATAR EXECUTIVE (live advert): a valid and current BD-700 type rating is required - no rating is provided.
Right to workNot published for direct entry pilots. All Qatar Airways Group flight-deck roles seen live are based in Doha, Qatar. Qatar Airways does not publish nationality restrictions, visa or residency-sponsorship terms, or right-to-work conditions on its pilot adverts. The Cadet Pilot Training Programme IS nationality-restricted: applicants must be a Qatari National, or the applicant's mother must be a Qatari National (published on the airline's own cadet page).
MedicalMAINLINE DIRECT ENTRY: Not published (no live advert). CADET: must be medically fit and able to obtain a Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) Class 1 medical certificate - published on the airline's own cadet page. QATAR EXECUTIVE Type Rated Captain BD-700 (live advert, verified 25 Aug 2026): current Class 1 Medical Certificate.
EnglishQATAR EXECUTIVE Type Rated Captain BD-700 (live advert, verified directly on the airline's own site 25 Aug 2026): minimum English Language Proficiency level 4. CADET (published on the airline's own cadet page): a recent overall IELTS band score attained within the last 24 months of not less than 4.5, with not less than 4.0 in each component. MAINLINE DIRECT ENTRY: Not currently published - no live advert. ICAO ELP 4 was the standard in previous mainline campaigns but that could not be re-verified in this check.
AgeNot published for Direct Entry First Officers or Captains - no age limit appears anywhere on Qatar Airways' own site for these roles, and none is published for the live Qatar Executive BD-700 vacancy either. Cadet Pilot Training Programme only (published on the airline's own cadet page): must be above the age of 17 years and below 27 years at the time of application.
AlsoThe single most important point for a pilot reading this: as of 25 August 2026 there is NO open Direct Entry First Officer or Direct Entry Captain vacancy for mainline Qatar Airways on the airline's own careers portal. This was verified directly - the portal's Pilots & Flight Operations filter returns only a Qatar Executive business-jet captain role, two helicopter captain roles and a recruiter role, and the old direct-entry job URL returns HTTP 404. Because no mainline advert is open, Qatar Airways currently publishes NO hours figures, NO licence requirement, NO age limit and NO medical or English requirement for mainline direct entry. Any such figure you see on a job board is that board's own claim, not a live Qatar Airways requirement. Hours and licence figures from Qatar Airways' previous (now closed) campaigns have been moved to 'unverified' rather than shown as requirements, because they could not be re-confirmed in this check and because airlines routinely change thresholds between campaigns. The only mainline route with a page still live is the Cadet Pilot Training Programme, which is closed to anyone who is not a Qatari national (or whose mother is not a Qatari national) - and even that advert's open status could not be fully confirmed. Two Qatar Airways GROUP pilot vacancies are genuinely open and verified live, but neither is mainline airline flying: the Qatar Executive BD-700 Type Rated Captain (business-jet charter) and the AW139/AW189 Helicopter Captain roles.

What the last direct-entry campaigns asked for

Requirements change with each campaign, so the rows below are a record of recent adverts, not current requirements. They are still the best guide to what to build towards.

AdvertWhat it asked forSource and status
Type Rated First Officer, Boeing1,000 h multi-crew, multi-engine commercial airline time on jets of 30,000 kg MTOW or more; 500 h on the 787, 777, 767, 757, 747-400/-8 or 737NG/MAX; last flight on one of those types within 12 months; ICAO ATPL or frozen ATPL with IR; Class 1; ICAO English 4The airline’s own advert; closed
Type Rated First Officer, AirbusThe same 1,000 h jet requirement, with 500 h on a listed Airbus typeThe airline’s own advert; its page returned an error on 25 August 2026
Non-Type Rated First Officer1,000 h multi-crew, multi-engine on EFIS jets of 20,000 kg MTOW or more; frozen ATPL with IR; Class 1 valid at least two months after joining; type rating given on the A320, A350, 777 or 787 fleetJob-board summary of a January 2026 posting; not confirmed on the portal
Recruitment event, Amsterdam, 10 and 11 April 2026Type-rated and non-type-rated pilots; ICAO, EASA or FAA ATPL, or a frozen ATPL with a CPL from the same authority; instrument rating on the current type; Class 1 from the same authority; ICAO English 4; current type flown within 12 monthsRelayed by a job board; we could not confirm it went ahead after the March disruption

Three points follow. The weight thresholds decide whose time counts: regional jets such as the CRJ900 and E190 are above 20 tonnes, but turboprops are not EFIS jets, so ATR and Dash 8 time met none of these adverts. The licence and the medical had to come from the same authority, which catches pilots who have changed licence state. And the licence is converted to a Qatari one after joining; our study-guide research (September 2026) found that the QCAA’s conversion guidance (PIL.03/23) includes an air law and operational procedures exam, which we could not re-check.

Entry routes

The routes that are open: cadets and the wider Group

Cadet Pilot Training Programme. Sponsored training to a Multi-Crew Pilot Licence, for Qatari nationals or applicants whose mother is a Qatari national. The advert asks for an age above 17 and below 27 at application, a height of at least 160 cm, a secondary-school average of 70%, an IELTS band of 4.5 (4.0 in each part) from the last 24 months, a QCAA Class 1, police clearance and, for men, completion of or exemption from National Service. The airline’s cadet page, as indexed, describes up to 18 months of foundation maths, science and English where needed, then 20 months of pilot training at Qatar Aeronautical College. The cadet and a guarantor sign the scholarship contract, and the cadet must serve at least five years after the final line check and appointment as First Officer. The advert still loads, but it was not in the portal’s pilot listing on 25 August 2026, and the cadet page is reported to say that applications will resume later.

Qatar Executive, BD-700 Captain. The Group’s business-jet operator was advertising for type-rated Captains, closing on 30 November 2026: an ICAO, EASA or FAA ATPL with an instrument rating, a current BD-700 rating, 5,000 hours on aeroplanes with 2,000 on jets, 1,500 in command of multi-crew jets and 500 on the BD-700, a last jet flight within 12 months, a Class 1 and ICAO English 4. Simulator time does not count. It is corporate flying, and no transfer route to the airline is published.

Helicopters. AW139 and AW189 Captain vacancies were posted on 23 August 2026 and closed on 6 September.

Selection process

  1. MAINLINE DIRECT ENTRY: Qatar Airways publishes NOTHING about its direct-entry pilot selection stages on its own site, and there is no live advert to publish them in. Multi-stage processes described by aggregators and forums (aptitude/PSA testing, ATPL knowledge exam, technical interview, HR and psychologist panel, simulator assessment, Doha medical, roadshow assessment events) come from those third parties, NOT from the airline, and are not verified here.
  2. CADET PROGRAMME - Stage 1 (Initial Shortlisted Candidates): submit all data and documents; Qatar Airways reviews the application; if initially shortlisted the applicant is notified to undergo pre-selection assessment tests, then is invited to a personal interview with the Qatar Airways selection panel.
  3. CADET PROGRAMME - Stage 2 (Selected Candidates): notified in writing, then must supply supporting documentation including Ministry of Education and Ministry of Labour letters, a QCAA Class 1 medical certificate, a Police Clearance (CID) Certificate, Guarantor financial documents, a Qatari local bank IBAN certificate and passport documents.
  4. CADET PROGRAMME - final step: the student and the Guarantor jointly sign the Scholarship Contract with Qatar Airways.

Bases and fleet

Bases: Doha (DOH) - Hamad International Airport, Qatar (sole pilot base; every Qatar Airways Group flight-deck role seen live on the portal on 25 Aug 2026 lists 'Qatar - Doha' as the work location)

Fleet: Airbus A320 · Airbus A321neo · Airbus A350-900 · Airbus A350-1000 · Airbus A380 · Boeing 777-200LR · Boeing 777-300ER · Boeing 787-8 · Boeing 787-9

Fleet changes that decide where new pilots fly

Reuters put the near-term plan at 19 deliveries and six aircraft leaving between September 2026 and the end of 2027. Those deliveries, more than the recovery in traffic, are what would create new seats, and the non-rated advert of January 2026 shows the fleets new joiners were being trained for.

How to prepare

While no campaign is open, preparation means staying eligible for the next one. The last adverts asked for a flight on type or on a jet within the previous 12 months, so keep flying, and keep your licence, instrument rating and Class 1 issued by the same authority. Candidates report an ATPL knowledge paper at the Doha assessment, described by preparation sites as about 50 questions with a 70% pass mark: the ATPL theory banks are the core of that, and the A320 bank matters if you fly the A320 family, which Qatar Airways operates alongside its wide-bodies.

For the assessment itself, the online tests, the Doha exam, the panels and the simulator, read our Qatar Airways pilot interview guide; the Library article on airline pilot recruitment and selection covers the general shape. While Qatar Airways is closed to direct entry, compare the carriers on the Middle East pilot jobs page, and check Qatar Airways’ entry on the jobs board for the latest status.

What we could not confirm

These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.

Common questions

Is Qatar Airways hiring pilots in 2026? Not for mainline direct entry at our last check. On 25 August 2026 the careers portal’s pilot listing showed no First Officer or Captain vacancy for the airline itself, only a Qatar Executive BD-700 Captain role, helicopter Captain roles and a recruiter post. In September 2026 the airline retired its A330s and seconded some pilots to RwandAir, while announcing 138 new aircraft over five years. Check the portal before relying on any job-board advert.

How many hours do you need to fly for Qatar Airways? No figure is published while no campaign is open. The last direct-entry adverts asked type-rated First Officers for 1,000 hours of multi-crew, multi-engine jet time on aircraft of 30,000 kg or more with 500 hours on a listed type, and non-type-rated First Officers for 1,000 hours on EFIS jets of 20,000 kg or more. Treat those as a guide to the next campaign, not as current requirements.

Can foreigners join the Qatar Airways cadet programme? Not the sponsored programme: it is for Qatari nationals and for applicants whose mother is a Qatari national. A self-funded MPL programme open to other nationalities has run in the past, as afm.aero reported; we found no current version of it on the airline’s pages.

Does Qatar Airways bond its pilots? Cadets are bound by contract to serve at least five years after appointment as First Officer. For direct entry, Qatar Airways publishes no bond terms. Candidates on PPRuNe report no bond for rated pilots current on their type, and a type-rating bond for non-rated joiners or pilots moving to a type they have not flown, so get the terms in writing.

Why did Qatar Airways send pilots to RwandAir? Reuters reported on 25 September 2026 that Qatar Airways had permanently retired its idle A330s and offered a group of A330 pilots a voluntary, short-term secondment to RwandAir. Jet fuel prices had roughly doubled since the 2026 conflict began and demand for connections through the Gulf had fallen.
