American Airlines Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
American hires at the FAA Part 121 ATP minimums — 1,500 hours, or 1,000 under the military pathway — and scores an aptitude battery before a recruiter reads the application. Its wholly-owned regionals Envoy, Piedmont and PSA flow pilots to the mainline, and the American Airlines Cadet Academy is the ab-initio route. First Class medical, FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit, unrestricted US work authorisation. First Officers only: command is by seniority.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Bases and fleet
Bases: Charlotte · Chicago O’Hare · Dallas–Fort Worth · Los Angeles · Miami · New York (JFK/LGA) · Philadelphia · Phoenix · Washington DCA · Boston
Fleet: A319/A320/A321 · B737-800/MAX 8 · B777 · B787
How to prepare
New hires go to the A319/A320/A321 or the 737-800/MAX 8 fleets, with the 777 and 787 later by seniority. Split your preparation between the A320 bank and the B737 bank — you will not know the fleet until the class date — and use the ATPL banks for the general knowledge the interview at Dallas–Fort Worth covers. The aptitude screen comes before any human contact, so practise timed reasoning tests too.
Then read the complete airline pilot interview guide for the HR and competency stages, and check American Airlines’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
