British Airways Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
British Airways recruits direct-entry pilots in campaigns. For a short-haul First Officer there are two A320-family operations: BA mainline at Heathrow and BA Euroflyer at Gatwick, whose pilots sit on BA’s master seniority list; a separate long-haul listing also exists, and BA CityFlyer flies E190s from London City. Euroflyer’s 2026 campaign asked rated applicants for a UK CAA ATPL (or a conversion already started) and 500 hours or 100 sectors on a ZFTT-qualifying aircraft, a UK Class 1 and ICAO English Level 6, and offered non-type-rated applicants a company-funded rating. Command is by seniority.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Is British Airways hiring pilots now?
Recruiting at the last check on 21 September 2026 — First Officer seat: Recruiting; Captain seat: Not offered. Campaign-based: BA Euroflyer ran a 2026 First Officer campaign at Gatwick for rated and non-type-rated pilots; command is by seniority. Check careers.ba.com for which listings are open.
What the airline’s own material showed: Rated and non-type-rated BA Euroflyer First Officer adverts appeared on BA’s careers site in 2026 (at least one reference closed on 30 June 2026); a mainline A320 First Officer advert for Heathrow, undated, is still indexed on BA’s older jobs portal; and a separate long-haul listing exists (our study-guide research, September 2026). Search results on 21 September 2026 also showed the long-haul and Euroflyer listings and the Speedbird Pilot Academy. A Gatwick “Premium Short-Haul” First Officer listing seen on job aggregators could not be confirmed as a BA stream, and the long-haul listing’s closing date could not be confirmed. Which listings are open today must be checked on careers.ba.com/pilots; not read directly on the portal.

Bases and fleet
Bases: London Heathrow (mainline) · London Gatwick (BA Euroflyer) · London City (BA CityFlyer)
Fleet: 298 aircraft in IAG’s 2025 reporting · Short haul: entirely A320 family (A319ceo, A320ceo, A321ceo, A320neo, A321neo) · Long haul: A350-1000, A380, B777, B787 · About 20 Embraer E190s (BA CityFlyer)
How to prepare
The A320 family is BA’s entire short-haul fleet, mainline and Euroflyer, so the A320 bank is where a short-haul candidate should live: candidate reports describe A320 technical questions, particularly in a type-rated stream. The simulator is reported as an entirely raw-data, two-sector exercise with a partner, on a type that may be unfamiliar, and the older mainline advert said long-haul suitability is assessed there. The ATPL theory banks cover the rest of the technical interview. Euroflyer’s 2026 adverts asked for ICAO English Level 6; check which direct-entry listing is open before you apply.
Then read the complete airline pilot interview guide for the HR and competency stages, and check British Airways’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Figures here come from BA adverts — some undated, some reproduced by job aggregators — from candidate reports, and from search results of BA’s careers pages on 21 September 2026. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Which direct-entry listings (Heathrow short haul, long haul, Euroflyer) are open in autumn 2026, and the long-haul listing’s dates. In search results on 21 September 2026 it asked for a UK CAA ATPL, frozen ATPL or MPL and 1,500 h total with a rating on a CS-25 multi-pilot jet or a 10 t+ multi-pilot turboprop; not confirmed on the portal.
- A Gatwick “Premium Short-Haul” First Officer listing seen on job aggregators in 2026 — not confirmed as a BA stream
- Whether the Euroflyer non-rated type rating is unbonded, and the online test provider (SHL, PILAPT and Aon cut-e are all named by preparation sites)
- Speedbird Pilot Academy 2026 application dates and places (search results on 21 September 2026 cited up to 160 funded places)
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.
