United Airlines Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
United’s Aviate programme is the most structured pathway of the US majors: United Aviate Academy for ab-initio, then a participating Part 135 operator or United Express carrier, then a United seat after 1,200 hours PIC (Part 135) or 1,600 hours PIC (United Express) under the August 2026 programme guide. Direct entry needs an unrestricted FAA ATP with multi-engine rating and 1,500 hours, a First Class medical, a passport with six months’ validity and the right to work in the US without sponsorship. No external Captains.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

How to prepare
Most new hires start on the 737 or the A320 family, with the 757/767, 777 and 787 later. Work the B737 and A320 banks together and the ATPL theory banks for the technical interview; United’s assessment day at the Denver training centre includes a panel interview that goes deep on decision-making and systems knowledge, and a bachelor’s degree, while not required, is preferred.
Then read the complete airline pilot interview guide for the HR and competency stages, and check United Airlines’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Researched on 21 September 2026 from search-engine results of the airline’s own careers pages, job postings and industry job boards — not from a direct read of the portal. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Whether direct-entry interviews are being scheduled at the same pace as Aviate flow-throughs in late 2026
