SWISS International Air Lines Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
SWISS’s live direct-entry vacancy at the last check was Direct Entry First Officer A320, on the Lufthansa Group careers portal: it was open when the portal was read on 25 August 2026 and still in search results on 21 September. A Direct Entry First Officer A330 advert is still relayed by job boards, but the portal returned it as withdrawn on 25 August. The conditions are an EASA Part-FCL ATPL(A), a CPL(A)/IR with ATPL(A) theory, or an MPL, with full documentation of your flying experience; a minimum number of hours on the aircraft type of the vacancy, set in each advert; German at B2 or above if it is not your first language, and ICAO English Level 4; a Swiss Matura or Abitur, an HF diploma or a university entrance qualification; an EASA Class 1; and the right to work in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA. Job-board copies of the A320 vacancy ask for a valid A320 type rating and 800 hours on the A320 family, while an older version took non-rated pilots with 600 turbine hours, so check the advert. No direct-entry Captain route is offered, so experienced pilots join as First Officers; SWISS’s bases are Zurich and Geneva, and its ab-initio route runs through the European Flight Academy with Swiss AviationTraining.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Reading the requirements line by line
- Hours on type, not total time. The minimum is a number of hours on the aircraft type of the vacancy, and each advert sets its own. Job-board copies of the A320 vacancy give 800 hours on the A320 family; we could not confirm that on the portal, so read the advert you apply against.
- Three licences, and the paperwork to prove the hours. An EASA Part-FCL ATPL(A), a CPL(A)/IR with the ATPL(A) theory, or an MPL is accepted, with full documentation of your flying experience, so have your logbooks and records in order before you apply.
- German at B2, English at Level 4. German at B2 or above is required unless it is your first language, alongside ICAO English Level 4.
- Matura-level education. A Swiss Matura or Abitur, an HF diploma or a university entrance qualification is required, whatever your flying experience.
- Switzerland or the EU/EFTA. The right to work in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA is required, with an EASA Class 1.
- The type rating. Job-board copies of the A320 vacancy ask you to hold a valid A320 rating, while an older version took non-rated pilots with 600 turbine hours. We found no bond figures.

Selection process
The airline does not publish its selection stages in detail; expect an online application, screening against the published minimums, an interview and a simulator or aptitude assessment before the medical.
Bases and fleet
Bases: Zurich · Geneva
Fleet: A220 · A320 family / A320neo · A330-300 · A340-300 · B777-300ER · A350-900
How to prepare
The open vacancy is on the A320 family, which the A320 bank covers, the A320neo included; if SWISS reopens its A330 stream, the same bank covers the fly-by-wire philosophy and control laws the Airbus types share, and the ATPL theory banks cover the performance, meteorology and navigation a wide-body seat draws on. SWISS also flies the A220, and v1prep has an A220 bank for it. Each vacancy counts hours on type, so total your logbook by aircraft before you apply, and get your documents in order: SWISS asks for full documentation of your flying experience. We found no published selection stages; prepare for aptitude testing, a competency interview and a simulator check, and practise your answers in German as well as English if German is not your first language.
For the interview itself, read our SWISS pilot interview guide on the simulator check, the interview and the Airbus questions to prepare, and the Library’s pilot CV and application, which covers the flight hours table, time on type and the logbook. The European Flight Academy route is described on our Lufthansa Group requirements page, and Edelweiss, also based in Zurich, has a page of its own: Edelweiss pilot requirements. For the types, the Library covers the A320 flight control laws and protections and the A220’s fly-by-wire controls. Check SWISS’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Researched on 21 September 2026 from search-engine results of the airline’s own careers pages, job postings and industry job boards — not from a direct read of the portal. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Hours minimums for each vacancy
- Whether the A320 vacancy requires the type rating: job-board copies seen in October 2026 ask for a valid A320 type rating and 800 hours on the A320 family, while an older version accepted non-rated pilots with 600 turbine hours.
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.

A Direct Entry First Officer A330 advert is still relayed by job boards, but the portal returned it as withdrawn. Confirm that a vacancy is open before you apply.
How many hours do you need to fly for SWISS? SWISS sets a minimum number of hours on the aircraft type of each vacancy rather than a single total-time figure, and the number is in the advert. Job-board copies of the A320 vacancy give 800 hours on the A320 family, which we could not confirm on the portal, so read the advert you apply against.
Do you need to speak German to fly for SWISS? Yes, unless German is your first language: SWISS asks for German at B2 or above, alongside English at ICAO Level 4 or above.
What education does SWISS require? A Swiss Matura or Abitur, an HF diploma or a university entrance qualification. The licence can be an EASA Part-FCL ATPL(A), a CPL(A)/IR with ATPL(A) theory, or an MPL, with full documentation of your flying experience.
