Porter Airlines Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, License and Hiring Process

RecruitingF/O: RecruitingCaptain: RecruitingChecked 23 October 2026

Porter Airlines, the Toronto-based airline of the Embraer E195-E2 jet and the De Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop, was recruiting First Officers and Captains at the last check, on 23 October 2026: its careers portal still served its E195-E2 First Officer and Direct Entry Captain postings at Toronto, and job boards carried copies of its Dash 8-400 postings. Porter’s pilot careers page, as search results showed it, sets a minimum of 1,000 total hours, and job boards’ copies of its postings, also in search results, ask 1,000 hours with an ATPL or the IATRA exam for the Dash 8-400 and 1,500 hours with an ATPL for the E195-E2. Below the minimum, commercial pilots with 200 to 1,000 hours may apply for an early connection, and graduates of Porter’s partner schools on the Destination Porter pathway can interview from 500 hours. From zero hours, CAE’s Destination Porter Cadet Program leads, subject to conditions, to a Dash 8-400 First Officer seat. A job board’s copy says no type rating is required. In October 2025 the fleet was 48 E195-E2s and 29 Dash 8-400s.

What we found at the last check: At the last check, on 23 October 2026, Porter’s careers portal still served its E195-E2 First Officer and Direct Entry Captain postings at Toronto (their titles only: the text is loaded by script), and job boards carried copies of its Dash 8-400 First Officer and Captain postings in search results; its pilot careers page, as search results showed it, sets a minimum of 1,000 total hours, and the next Destination Porter cohort is planned for 2026.

How we checked

Re-checked on 23 October 2026. Read directly that day, in downloads made through the GitHub runner (tools/careers/src/saa-porter-2026-10-23/): Porter’s careers portal still served “First Officer - Embraer E195-E2 (Toronto) YYZ” (job 5312) and “Direct Entry Captain - Embraer E195-E2 (Toronto) YYZ” (job 5297), both “in Mississauga, Canada”, but only their titles could be read, the posting text being loaded by script; AviationCV’s copies answered with a bot check; CAE’s page for the Destination Porter: Cadet Program; and the February 2024 base reports (AirlineGeeks, 15 February 2024; ch-aviation, 19 February 2024). Read in search-engine results only: flyporter.com’s pilot careers and Destination Porter pages, the Dash 8 postings, the job boards’ copies of the postings (PilotsGlobal, Pilot Career Center, Workopolis, AviationCV) and Porter’s and Embraer’s releases. Porter’s Destination Porter page (its French version), as search results showed it on 23 October 2026: the 2025 cohort is closed and the next is planned for 2026; from 500 flight hours a pilot on the pathway can interview for a First Officer role, and after the interview and a simulator evaluation receives a conditional offer, confirmed on passing the IATRA/ATPL exams and reaching 1,000 total hours. Porter’s careers portal, as search results showed it on 21 October 2026, also carried “First Officer Dash 8” (Toronto, job 4844) and “Direct Entry Captain - Dash 8” (Toronto, job 4969), without dates; on 23 October job boards (AviationCV) carried copies titled “First Officer - Embraer E2 YYZ”, “First Officer Dash 8” and “Direct Entry Captain Dash 8”. Porter’s pilot careers page, as indexed on 21 October, states a minimum hiring requirement of 1,000 total hours and invites commercial pilots with 200 to 1,000 hours to apply and establish an early connection. Job boards’ copies of the postings: Pilot Career Center gives 1,000 h with an ATPL or the IATRA for the Dash 8-400 First Officer, 1,500 h with an ATPL for the E195-E2 First Officer and 4,500 h for the E195-E2 Direct Entry Captain; PilotsGlobal gives, for a Dash 8 Captain, 2,500 h total with 500 h in command on type (or 1,500 h in command of a turboprop over 44,000 lb) and the type rating, and another copy 3,000 h; PilotsGlobal’s copies of the E-Jet and Dash 8 First Officer listings give a TCCA Class 1 medical and ICAO English Level 4 and mark visa sponsorship as not offered, the E-Jet copy accepting an ATPL or the SAMRA and SARON exams and saying no type rating is required and training is provided; one PilotsGlobal copy of a Dash 8 First Officer listing gives 500 h total; the copies say pilots below the minimums may be considered on experience. Pilot Career Center’s profile of Porter asks for a Transport Canada license and medical and the legal right to work in Canada. No source we could download says whether Porter sponsors a work permit, so that stays among the points we could not confirm. CAE’s page, read directly: the Destination Porter: Cadet Program, run by Cygnet Aviation Academy, CAE and Porter for people with little or no flying experience and the unrestricted right to live and work in Canada (citizens or permanent residents), takes about 22 months, integrated ATPL training for 20 months in Kingston, Ontario, then Dash 8-400 type training at CAE Toronto; successful cadets receive a conditional letter of employment with Porter before the course and join Porter as Dash 8-400 First Officers on completion, subject to certain conditions, with no minimum time to work at Porter; applicants need a post-secondary degree or diploma, an age of at least 18, a Transport Canada Category 1 medical and ICAO English Level 4, and pass an online personality and aptitude assessment and an interview with Porter; applications are rolling, for three classes a year starting in January, May and August; those working toward or holding a CPL are considered overqualified and directed to Porter’s own hiring. Fleet, from Porter’s and Embraer’s releases in search results: 77 aircraft in October 2025, 48 E195-E2s and 29 Dash 8-400s (Porter, 23 October 2025); the 50th E195-E2 delivered in December 2025, of 75 on firm order with purchase rights for 25 more (Porter and Embraer, 23 December 2025). Bases, read directly: in February 2024 Porter had an E195-E2 crew base at Toronto Pearson and Dash 8-400 crew bases at Toronto Billy Bishop, Ottawa, Halifax and Thunder Bay, and announced E195-E2 crew bases at Ottawa (June 2024), Montréal-Trudeau (July 2024) and Vancouver (October 2024); no later base announcement was found. The previous check, on 21 October 2026, was from search-engine results.

Reading the requirements line by line

Porter’s careers portal could not be read: its posting pages load their text by script, and only their titles came through on 23 October 2026. The requirements below are as search results showed Porter’s own pages on 21 and 23 October 2026, and as job boards copied its postings, also seen in search results; each line says which.

Read the hours column with the license. Jazz Aviation publishes a 500-hour minimum and WestJet Encore 750 hours, below Porter’s 1,000, while Air Canada and WestJet’s mainline ask for 2,000 hours and a Transport Canada ATPL; Porter’s E195-E2 seat, at 1,500 hours in job boards’ copies, sits between them. All four Canadian airlines fly on Transport Canada licenses, and Delta asks for FAA certificates and the right to work in the US instead.

Selection process

The airline does not publish its selection stages in detail; expect an online application, screening against the published minimums, an interview and a simulator or aptitude assessment before the medical.

Bases and fleet

Bases: Toronto Pearson (E195-E2) and Toronto (Dash 8-400): the bases of the postings found on 21 and 23 October 2026 · Crew bases announced in February 2024: E195-E2 at Toronto Pearson, with Ottawa, Montréal-Trudeau and Vancouver to open in 2024; Dash 8-400 at Toronto Billy Bishop, Ottawa, Halifax and Thunder Bay (AirlineGeeks and ch-aviation, February 2024)

Fleet: 77 aircraft in October 2025: 48 Embraer E195-E2s and 29 De Havilland Dash 8-400s (Porter, 23 October 2025) · The 50th E195-E2 delivered in December 2025, with 75 on firm order and purchase rights for 25 more (Porter and Embraer, 23 December 2025)

Two fleets, and where they fly from

In Toronto, Porter’s two types fly from different airports: its E195-E2 jets from Toronto Pearson, because jets are not allowed at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the home of its Dash 8-400 turboprops (AirlineGeeks, February 2024).

How to prepare

Porter flies two types, and v1prep has a bank for one of them: the E-Jet bank covers the E1 and E2 families, so it is the core preparation for the E195-E2, with its systems, limitations and procedures. There is no Dash 8 bank on v1prep, so Dash 8-400 applicants should revise the Q400 from its own manuals and the Library’s turboprop articles, and every applicant can use the ATPL theory banks for the performance, meteorology and navigation underneath; they follow the EASA syllabus rather than Transport Canada’s, so take the IATRA, SAMRA and SARON exams from Transport Canada’s own study guides. Porter’s Destination Porter page, as search results showed it, names an interview and a simulator evaluation before a conditional offer, and CAE’s cadet page an online personality and aptitude assessment before an interview with Porter, so prepare for the interview and the simulator: the CRM interview set covers the crew resource management questions, and for the simulator, practice flying instrument approaches as one of a crew of two, with callouts and a shared workload. Do the paperwork first: total your logbook against the posting you choose, since the E195-E2 and the Dash 8-400 set different minimums; have your IATRA or ATPL exam results, your Transport Canada medical and your English proficiency endorsement ready; and if your license is from abroad, convert it to a Transport Canada license before you apply.

Porter has no interview guide on v1prep yet, so for the selection read the complete airline pilot interview guide and the Library’s airline simulator assessment and competency-based pilot interviews. For the aircraft, start with the Library’s Embraer E-Jet family and flight deck, which covers what the E2 changed, and, for the Dash 8-400, propellers and propeller control. The license route from zero hours is on how to become an airline pilot in Canada; the other Canadian airlines are on WestJet and Air Canada pilot requirements and on our page of pilot jobs in Canada, and the airlines that fly the Dash 8 and the ATR are on turboprop pilot jobs. Check Porter’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.

What we could not confirm

These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.

Common questions

Is Porter Airlines hiring pilots? Yes, at the last check, on 23 October 2026: Porter’s careers portal still served its E195-E2 First Officer and Direct Entry Captain postings at Toronto, and job boards carried copies of its Dash 8-400 First Officer and Captain postings. We could not read the postings’ dates, so confirm on Porter’s careers portal that a posting is still open before you apply.

How many hours do you need to fly for Porter Airlines? 1,000 total hours, the minimum hiring requirement on Porter’s pilot careers page as search results showed it. Job boards’ copies of the postings, also seen in search results, set 1,000 hours with an ATPL or the IATRA for a Dash 8-400 First Officer and 1,500 hours with an ATPL for an E195-E2 First Officer. Commercial pilots with 200 to 1,000 hours may apply to establish an early connection, and Destination Porter pilots can interview from 500 hours.

Do you need a type rating to fly for Porter Airlines? Not as a First Officer, by a job board’s copy: PilotsGlobal’s copy of a Porter E-Jet First Officer listing, seen in search results, says no type rating is required and training is provided. Porter’s own pages, as we could read them, do not state its type rating or bond terms. Job boards’ copies of the Dash 8-400 Direct Entry Captain posting ask for the rating.

What is Destination Porter? A mentorship pathway for graduates of Porter’s partner schools. Porter’s page, as search results showed it, says that from 500 flight hours you can interview for a First Officer role, that after the interview and a simulator evaluation comes a conditional offer, confirmed when you pass the IATRA or ATPL exams and reach 1,000 total hours, and that the next cohort is planned for 2026. For beginners, CAE runs the Destination Porter Cadet Program, an ab initio course of about 22 months that leads to a Dash 8-400 First Officer seat at Porter.

Can foreign pilots fly for Porter Airlines? Only if you already hold the right to work in Canada, as far as the sources we could read show: a job board’s profile of Porter asks for the legal right to work in Canada, and CAE’s cadet program takes Canadian citizens and permanent residents. PilotsGlobal’s copies of Porter’s First Officer listings, seen in search results, mark visa sponsorship as not offered, but Porter’s own wording on work permits is among the points we could not confirm. You also need a Transport Canada license, so a license from abroad has to be converted first.

Prepare for the assessment, not just the application

Getting the interview is the easy half. v1prep has 15,000+ technical questions with every answer cited to its source — A320, B737, EASA ATPL theory and the FAA writtens.
