Loganair Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
At the last check, on 21 September 2026, Loganair’s own flight-crew careers page said in search results that it was recruiting only Direct Entry Captains, and that it runs an Airline Returners Programme for pilots who have held a type rating before. A non-type-rated “Newly Qualified First Officer” listing (VN041) also exists on its recruitment site, but we could not confirm that it is taking applications. The published conditions are short: a UK CAA ATPL for Captains, or a UK CAA CPL/IR with ATPL theory for the First Officer listing; a UK CAA Class 1; and the right to live and work in the UK. Loganair provides the type rating, and we could not confirm a Captain hours minimum. The fleet is the ATR 42 and ATR 72, the Embraer E145, the Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman Islander, and the bases are Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Kirkwall, Sumburgh, the Isle of Man and Newcastle.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Entry routes
- Direct Entry Captain — open
- Airline Returners Programme — previously type-rated pilots
- Newly Qualified First Officer (non-rated) — listing exists, status unclear
Three routes, and which was open
Loganair lists three ways in, and at the last check only one was confirmed open:
| Route | For | Status at the last check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Entry Captain | Holders of a UK CAA ATPL; Loganair provides the type rating | Open: the careers page said only Direct Entry Captains were being recruited |
| Airline Returners Programme | Pilots who have held a type rating before | Run by Loganair; we found no separate criteria for it |
| Newly Qualified First Officer, non-type-rated (VN041) | Holders of a UK CAA CPL/IR with ATPL theory | Listed on Loganair’s recruitment site; not confirmed as taking applications |
For a newly qualified pilot, the First Officer listing is the one to watch, but treat it as unconfirmed while the careers page says only Captains are being recruited, and check with Loganair before you apply.

Bases and fleet
Bases: Glasgow · Edinburgh · Aberdeen · Inverness · Kirkwall · Sumburgh · Isle of Man · Newcastle
Fleet: ATR 42 / ATR 72 · Embraer E145 · Twin Otter · Britten-Norman Islander
How to prepare
Loganair flies the ATR 42 and 72, the Embraer E145, the Twin Otter and the Islander, and none of them has its own bank on v1prep: the E-Jet bank covers the E170 to E195 and the E2s, not the earlier E145. The ATPL theory banks are therefore the preparation that applies on every fleet. A Direct Entry Captain applicant should prepare the command side as carefully as the technical: decisions you have made, how you lead a crew and how you handle a disagreement on the flight deck. The Airline Returners Programme is for pilots who have held a type rating before, so if you apply through it, have your licence and logbook history ready to show the rating you held.
For the interview itself, read the complete airline pilot interview guide; the Library’s command upgrade article covers selection for Captain and leadership in command, and propellers and propeller control the turboprop side of the fleet. The published minimums of other Captain routes are compared on direct entry Captain jobs. Check Loganair’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Researched on 21 September 2026 from search-engine results of the airline’s own careers pages, job postings and industry job boards — not from a direct read of the portal. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Whether the First Officer listing is accepting applications
- Captain hours minimum
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.
Common questions

Yes, for Captains, at the last check on 21 September 2026: Loganair’s own flight-crew careers page said in search results that it was recruiting only Direct Entry Captains, and that it runs an Airline Returners Programme for previously type-rated pilots. We could not read the page directly, so confirm before you apply.

A non-type-rated “Newly Qualified First Officer” listing (VN041) exists on Loganair’s recruitment site, for holders of a UK CAA CPL/IR with ATPL theory, but the careers page said only Direct Entry Captains were being recruited, and we could not confirm that the listing is taking applications.
How many hours do you need to fly for Loganair? No hours minimum appeared in the results we found, and we could not confirm the Captain minimum. What Loganair does state is the licence: a UK CAA ATPL for Captains, or a UK CAA CPL/IR with ATPL theory for the First Officer listing.
Does Loganair provide the type rating? Yes, Loganair provides the type rating; we found no bond or cost terms. Its Airline Returners Programme is for pilots who have held a type rating before.
Can I fly for Loganair with an EASA licence? Not as the requirements are written: Loganair asks for a UK CAA licence, a UK CAA Class 1 and the right to live and work in the UK.
