Delta Air Lines Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process

RecruitingF/O: RecruitingCaptain: Not offeredChecked 21 September 2026

Delta takes continuous applications, runs a six-stage process, and — by the industry’s count — planned 2,400 to 2,600 pilot hires in 2026. The published bar is the FAA standard plus turbine depth: 1,500 hours total, 1,000 fixed-wing turbine, 250 PIC or SIC and 50 multi-engine, an FAA Commercial with instrument rating and ATP eligibility, a First Class medical and unrestricted US work authorisation. A degree is preferred, not required. Command is internal: Delta does not hire Captains, and never has.

Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Delta takes continuous applications through its portal rather than dated postings, so the evidence is an open application route, not a closing date.

Bases and fleet

Bases: Atlanta · Boston · Detroit · Los Angeles · Minneapolis–St Paul · New York (JFK/LGA) · Salt Lake City · Seattle

Fleet: A220 · A320 family · A330 · A350 · B717 · B737 · B757 · B767

How to prepare

Delta’s fleet runs from the A220 to the A350 and new hires are assigned by need, so the interview tests systems knowledge and airmanship across types rather than one aircraft. Work the A320 and B737 banks for the two narrow-body families most new hires start on, and the ATPL theory banks for the aerodynamics, performance and meteorology depth the records review and technical questions probe. Industry data puts the application-to-class timeline at 8 to 14 months, so prepare early and keep flying.
