FedEx Express Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
FedEx Express hires First Officers only, and not through a vacancy you answer: you build a pilot profile on FedEx’s careers site, and when FedEx selects a profile from that pool it e-mails an invitation to apply to an open position. At the last check, on 13 October 2026, its pilot careers pages appeared in search results, but we found no dated FedEx vacancy, so whether it is selecting this autumn is unconfirmed. The published minimums are an FAA ATP and 1,500 hours of fixed-wing time, with at least 500 hours as pilot in command of jets or qualifying turboprops, and 1,000 such hours preferred; FedEx’s own pilot pages list a bachelor’s degree as preferred. FedEx also calls a First Class medical, a radio-telephone operator’s permit, a valid US passport and SIDA badge eligibility mandatory, and says that it sponsors no work visas for pilots and that all non-US citizens must hold a Permanent Resident Card. Press and union reports name Memphis, Indianapolis and Oakland as its pilot bases. The jets in its fleet are the 777F, 767F, 757F, A300-600F and MD-11F.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.
Is FedEx Express hiring pilots now?
Unconfirmed at the last check on 13 October 2026 — First Officer seat: Unconfirmed; Captain seat: Not offered. ATP, 1,500 h fixed-wing and 500 h as pilot in command of jets or qualifying turboprops; a bachelor’s degree preferred on FedEx’s own pages; First Officers only, selected from a profile pool
What we found at the last check: At the last check, on 13 October 2026, FedEx’s own pilot careers pages, where pilots enter a profile that FedEx selects from when it has positions, appeared in search results, but we found no dated FedEx First Officer vacancy, so we could not confirm that it is selecting pilots this autumn. Keep your profile current and check the careers site.
How we checked
Search results of 13 October 2026 showed FedEx’s pilot careers page (careers.fedex.com/career-areas/pilot/), its pilot pages on groundcareers.fedex.com (minimum qualifications, FAQ, hiring process, pathways), the pilot profile entry on careers.fedex.com/pilot and FedEx’s Purple Runway site. FedEx’s FAQ says a profile selected from the pool receives an e-mail with a link to apply to an open crew member position, and describes remote computer-based testing and a one-day in-person panel and situational interviews, held at its Memphis offices. PilotsGlobal’s relays of FedEx B767, B777 and MD-11 First Officer postings were marked closed. FedEx’s pilots ratified a new contract on 9 June 2026 (ALPA). A preparation provider’s claim, relayed by ATP Flight School in June 2026, that FedEx planned about 800 pilot hires in 2026 has no FedEx source. Fleet from FedEx’s Form 10-K for the year to 31 May 2026; bases from press reports (April 2023) and ALPA (March 2025), since we found no base list on FedEx’s careers pages. Not read directly on the portal.
Requirements, as published
| Requirement | As published by the airline |
|---|---|
| Licence | FAA Airline Transport Pilot certificate, with an FCC radio-telephone operator’s permit |
| Minimum hours | 1,500 h total fixed-wing; at least 500 h as pilot in command (captain or aircraft commander of record) of jets, multi-engine turboprops of 12,500 lb or more or certain single-engine turboprops, with 1,000 h such time preferred. Simulator, helicopter, flight engineer and navigator time does not count |
| Type rating | Not required |
| Right to work | As FedEx publishes it: a valid US passport and SIDA badge eligibility among its mandatory requirements; no work-visa sponsorship for pilot applicants, and all non-US citizens must hold a Permanent Resident Card |
| Medical | Current FAA First Class Medical |
| Also | A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred on FedEx’s own pilot pages; job-board copies of its First Officer postings word it as a degree or equivalent time as a professional pilot. Also mandatory: a pre-employment drug test and a Pilot Records Improvement Act records evaluation; SIDA clearance includes employment-history and FBI fingerprint-based criminal history checks. |
Reading the requirements line by line
- 1,500 hours, fixed-wing only. FedEx counts only pilot time in fixed-wing aircraft: simulator, helicopter, flight engineer, navigator and bombardier time do not count towards the minimum. Military pilots enter their sorties as a number in their own fields, and FedEx converts them to flight hours with a factor of 0.30.
- 500 hours in command, of record. FedEx defines pilot in command as the captain or aircraft commander of record, not the pilot handling the controls, and the hours must be in jets, multi-engine turboprops of 12,500 lb or more or certain single-engine turboprops. At least 500 such hours are required and 1,000 preferred, so time as a First Officer, however long, does not count towards them.
- An ATP held, not ATP-eligible. The ATP certificate is one of the regulatory requirements FedEx calls mandatory minimum qualifications, with a current First Class medical and an FCC radio-telephone operator’s permit.
- A degree helps; it is not required. FedEx’s own pilot pages list a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as preferred, and job-board copies of its First Officer postings word it as a degree or equivalent time as a professional pilot. Some third-party guides still describe a degree as a requirement.
- Passport, residence and security. FedEx lists a valid US passport and eligibility for a SIDA airport security badge among the requirements it calls mandatory, and the SIDA clearance includes an employment history and an FBI fingerprint-based criminal history check. Its pilot FAQ also says that FedEx does not sponsor work visas for pilot applicants and that all non-US citizens must possess a Permanent Resident Card. FedEx does not say how the passport requirement applies to a permanent resident, so a non-citizen should ask FedEx before applying.
- Two pre-employment checks. A pre-employment drug test and a records evaluation under the Pilot Records Improvement Act, both on FedEx’s list of mandatory requirements.
Entry routes
- Direct entry First Officer — a pilot profile in FedEx’s applicant pool; selected pilots are invited to apply
- Purple Runway — FedEx’s partner-carrier pathway at Mountain Air Cargo, IFL Group, Empire Airlines or Corporate Air: an upfront FedEx interview, then 36 months and 500 h multi-engine turboprop PIC with the partner
- Military pilots — through the same pilot profile, with sorties converted to hours
- Direct entry Captain — not offered
Purple Runway, the feeder-carrier route
FedEx’s ATR and Cessna feeder aircraft are flown by contract operators, and Purple Runway is FedEx’s pathway for their pilots. FedEx’s Purple Runway site names four partners, Mountain Air Cargo, IFL Group, Empire Airlines and Corporate Air: you must be employed as a pilot by one of them, and must not have tested or interviewed with FedEx for a jet position before. Since the programme was revised in December 2023, the FedEx mainline interview comes first, there is no six-month wait to join and a degree is no longer required. After admission come at least 36 months of active service with the partner and at least 500 hours as pilot in command of multi-engine turboprops, with an unrestricted ATP, a First Class medical, no training or line-check failures and a jet transition course, and you must still meet FedEx’s First Officer minimums.
FedEx’s site describes a guaranteed flow to FedEx for participants who meet every eligibility requirement and complete every waypoint, while the programme’s terms allow FedEx to limit how many participants it enrols and hires in a year. Read the partner’s own terms before you join: its own hiring conditions come first, and descriptions of the programme from before the 2023 revision are out of date.
FedEx, the other cargo airlines and the US majors
The US cargo airlines and passenger majors on our jobs board, as recorded at each airline’s last check:
| Airline | Published minimum | Licence | Status at last check |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx Express | 1,500 h · 500 h PIC jet/turboprop | FAA ATP · degree preferred | Unconfirmed (13 October 2026) |
| UPS Airlines | 1,500 h · 1,000 h PIC jet/turboprop | FAA ATP (unrestricted) · degree preferred | Unconfirmed (14 October 2026) |
| Atlas Air | 1,500 h · 2,500 h preferred | FAA ATP (unrestricted) | Unconfirmed (21 September 2026) |
| Delta Air Lines | 1,500 h · 250 h PIC/SIC · 1,000 h turbine preferred | FAA CPL/IR · ATP-eligible | Recruiting (13 October 2026) |
| American Airlines | 1,500 h | FAA ATP (unrestricted) | Recruiting (14 October 2026) |
| United Airlines | 1,500 h direct entry | FAA ATP (unrestricted) + ME | Recruiting (13 October 2026) |
| Southwest Airlines | 2,500 h total or 1,500 h turbine | FAA ATP + AMEL | Not recruiting (21 September 2026) |
Read the minimum column with the definitions in mind: FedEx and UPS set their figures in hours of command of jets or turboprops, while the passenger majors set theirs mainly in total and turbine hours, with Delta adding 250 hours as pilot in command or second in command.

Bases and fleet
Bases: Memphis, Indianapolis and Oakland (named by press reports, April 2023, and ALPA, March 2025; we found no base list on FedEx’s careers pages)
Fleet: 700 aircraft at 31 May 2026, five of them not yet in service (FedEx Form 10-K, fiscal 2026) · Boeing 777F: 59 · Boeing 767F: 152 · Boeing 757-200F: 86 · Airbus A300-600F: 57 · MD-11F: 29, returning to service in stages from May 2026 after the grounding that followed the November 2025 UPS MD-11 accident · Feeder aircraft flown by contract operators: 62 ATR 42s and 72s, 216 Cessna 208Bs and 39 Cessna 408s
How to prepare
There is no 757, 767, 777, A300 or MD-11 bank on v1prep, so for FedEx the ATPL theory banks are the technical preparation, with the ATP bank for the Part 121, transport performance and turbine-systems questions a US airline interview draws on. FedEx describes its process as remote computer-based testing followed by a one-day set of in-person panel and situational interviews at its offices in Memphis: practise timed tests before an invitation arrives, and prepare specific examples for the situational questions with the US airline interview set. Do the paperwork first. Total your command time the way FedEx counts it, as captain or aircraft commander of record rather than as the pilot flying; leave out simulator, flight engineer and navigator time; and, if you are a military pilot, enter your sorties in their own fields rather than adding them to your hours. The freight side of the job, dangerous goods and load limits, is worth revising as well.
For the interview itself, read the complete airline pilot interview guide and the Library’s competency-based pilot interviews, for the situational questions. For the freight side of the job, the Library covers dangerous goods and cargo loading and floor limits, and, for long-range twin-engine flying, ETOPS. If your command time is still short of 500 hours, the Library’s pilot career pathways explains time building, turbine time and regional flows. To compare a passenger major, read United Airlines pilot requirements. Check FedEx’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Researched on 13 October 2026 from search-engine results of the airline’s own careers pages, job postings and industry job boards — not from a direct read of the portal. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Whether FedEx is selecting pilots from its applicant pool in autumn 2026: a preparation provider reported in June 2026 that FedEx planned about 800 pilot hires in 2026, but we found no FedEx source for it
- How FedEx applies its passport requirement to permanent residents: it lists a valid US passport among its mandatory requirements and also says that all non-US citizens must hold a Permanent Resident Card, without saying how the two fit together
- Which single-engine turboprops count towards the 500 h in command; FedEx’s wording names only “certain” types
- Whether any pilots remain based in Anchorage, Los Angeles or Guangzhou: FedEx said in April 2023 that it would close its Anchorage and Los Angeles MD-11 crew bases, yet ALPA’s FedEx page still lists Anchorage, and a 2023 press report names Guangzhou
- How many Purple Runway participants FedEx takes and hires each year: its site describes a guaranteed flow for those who complete the programme, but the programme’s terms let FedEx limit the numbers
- The experience of recent hires: preparation providers reported in 2026 that successful applicants typically had about 4,000 h, a figure FedEx does not publish
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.
Common questions
Is FedEx hiring pilots? Unconfirmed at the last check, on 13 October 2026. FedEx takes pilot profiles into an applicant pool and, when it selects a profile, e-mails an invitation to apply to an open First Officer position. Its pilot careers pages appeared in search results, but we found no dated FedEx vacancy, so keep your profile current and check the careers site.
How many hours do you need to fly for FedEx? 1,500 hours of fixed-wing flight time, with at least 500 hours as pilot in command, counted as captain or aircraft commander of record, in jets, multi-engine turboprops of 12,500 lb or more or certain single-engine turboprops. FedEx prefers 1,000 such hours. Simulator, helicopter, flight engineer and navigator time does not count.
Do you need a degree to fly for FedEx? No. FedEx’s own pilot pages list a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as preferred, and job-board copies of its First Officer postings word it as a degree or equivalent time as a professional pilot. Some third-party guides still describe a degree as a requirement.
Can a non-US citizen fly for FedEx? FedEx’s pilot FAQ says that it does not sponsor work visas for pilot applicants and that all non-US citizens must possess a Permanent Resident Card for employment with FedEx. FedEx also lists a valid US passport among the requirements it calls mandatory and does not say how that applies to a permanent resident, so ask FedEx before applying.
