Atlas Air Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, License and Hiring Process

UnconfirmedF/O: UnconfirmedCaptain: Not offeredChecked 22 October 2026

Atlas Air flies Boeing 747, 777 and 767 aircraft on cargo and passenger charter flights from crew domiciles across the US, and hires its pilots as First Officers. Whether it is hiring now is unconfirmed: at the last check, on 22 October 2026, its careers site invited pilots to apply and to join its pilot talent community, but the talent-community posting, in job-board copies dated as late as May 2026, said Atlas was not currently hiring and had no timeline for resuming. The minimums, as search results quoted Atlas’s First Officer page and its postings on 22 October 2026, are a current FAA ATP or restricted ATP with an airplane multi-engine rating, 1,500 hours of total time, 2,500 preferred, a First Class medical, a passport valid for at least 24 months and the right to work in the US. The page, as quoted, takes pilots from 21 with a restricted ATP or 23 with a full one, but a September 2026 posting relayed by a job board gives ages 23 to 65. On 16 March 2026 Atlas ordered 20 Airbus A350 freighters, for delivery from 2029 to 2034.

Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Is Atlas Air hiring pilots now?

Unconfirmed at the last check on 22 October 2026 — First Officer seat: Unconfirmed; Captain seat: Not offered. 1,500 h and an FAA ATP or restricted ATP (2,500 h Part 121/135/91/military preferred); passport valid for 24 months; from 21 with an R-ATP, 23 with an ATP

What we found at the last check: At the last check, on 22 October 2026, whether Atlas is recruiting First Officers was still unconfirmed. Its careers site invites pilots to apply and to join its pilot talent community, but its First Officer Talent Community posting, in job-board copies dated as late as 9 May 2026, says Atlas is not currently hiring and has no timeline for resuming; in September 2026 a job board relayed an Atlas First Officer posting for Miami. The First Officer page, as search results quote it, takes a restricted or unrestricted FAA ATP, from 21 with an R-ATP or 23 with an ATP.

How we checked

Re-checked on 22 October 2026 in search-engine results: job-board copies (Lensa, dated 9 May 2026; Avianation, 31 March 2025; Indeed; Monster) of Atlas’s “First Officer Talent Community” posting say “At this time, we are not currently hiring and do not have a timeline for when we will resume”, invite pilots to submit their information, ask for 1,500 hours total and accept an ATP with a “CIRC APCH - VMC Only” limitation; Avianation relayed a full-time Atlas First Officer posting in Miami in September 2026 (ages 23 to 65, 2,500 hours preferred, 500 hours turbine preferred); older copies were dated February 2026. Atlas’s release of 16 March 2026, read directly through the runner on 22 October 2026, gives its firm order for 20 Airbus A350Fs (options for 20 more; deliveries from 2029 to 2034) and its fleet of 113 Boeing 747s, 777s and 767s. The Atlas Cadet Academy’s site (atlascadetacademy.com), read through the runner on 22 October 2026, offers the academy to Illinois Aviation Academy students at DuPage Airport and says participants are not eligible for employment as an Atlas pilot until they hold an unrestricted ATP after completing training, and that employment is not guaranteed. Read directly on 18 and 22 October 2026 through the GitHub runner (the same text both days): the address of Atlas’s First Officer page (careers.atlasairworldwide.com/fo) returned Atlas’s careers home page, which shows no hiring notice, invites pilots to apply and to join its pilot talent community but shows no dated First Officer posting, names its US crew domiciles “including” Anchorage (ANC), New York (JFK), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA) and Seattle (SEA), and says its pilots fly global cargo and passenger/VIP charters, on “the world’s largest fleet of widebody freighters”. From search-engine results on 18 October 2026: Atlas’s First Officer page, as the results quote it, asks for a current restricted or unrestricted FAA ATP with an airplane multi-engine class rating and English proficiency endorsement, a minimum age of 21 for an R-ATP or 23 for an ATP, a current FAA First Class medical and a passport valid for 24 months; job postings give 1,500 h total, with 2,500 h in a Part 121, 135, 91 or military environment preferred; and the aviation press reports that Atlas flew its last 767 for Amazon on 6 April 2025 and ended its last narrowbody flying, the 737-800 freighters it flew for Amazon, in May 2025 (STAT Times; Cargo Facts).

Reading the requirements line by line

Atlas’s First Officer page could not be read directly: its address opened the careers home page when a copy was downloaded on 18 and again on 22 October 2026. The requirements below are as search results quoted that page, and job boards copied Atlas’s postings, on 22 October 2026; the FAA rules cited were read in the regulations themselves.

Entry routes

The cadet academy and the university pathway

Atlas has two routes for pilots who are still training:

Neither route skips the hours. The academy names an unrestricted ATP, which means 1,500 hours and an age of 23 (14 CFR 61.153 and 61.159), even though Atlas’s First Officer page, as search results quote it, accepts a restricted ATP from direct applicants.

Read the license column with the minimum: the airlines word their license requirement differently, from a commercial certificate with ATP eligibility to an unrestricted ATP, and Atlas’s names the restricted ATP as well.

Selection process

The airline does not publish its selection stages in detail; expect an online application, screening against the published minimums, an interview and a simulator or aptitude assessment before the medical.

Bases and fleet

Bases: US crew domiciles “including” Anchorage (ANC), New York (JFK), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA) and Seattle (SEA), with gateway travel for commuting and company-paid hotels in training, in base, before and after trips and on reserve; base availability follows operational needs (careers page, read 18 and 22 October 2026)

Fleet: 113 aircraft, Boeing 747s, 777s and 767s (Atlas, 16 March 2026): 747-400 and 747-8 freighters, 777 freighters and 767s; Atlas calls it the world’s largest fleet of widebody freighters, and its pilots also fly passenger and VIP charters (careers page, October 2026) · Airbus A350F: 20 on firm order with options for 20 more, deliveries from 2029 to 2034, adding Airbus and Rolls-Royce to Atlas’s supplier base (Atlas, 16 March 2026) · No narrow-body flying since May 2025, when Atlas ended the 737-800 freighter flying it did for Amazon (Cargo Facts)

How to prepare

There is no 747, 777 or 767 bank on v1prep, so for Atlas the ATPL theory banks are the technical preparation, with the ATP bank for the Part 121, transport performance and turbine-systems questions a US airline interview draws on. Atlas does not publish its selection stages. Preparation sites and candidates, in 2025 and 2026, report an interview with HR and crew-environment questions followed by a technical discussion, and one preparation site adds a simulator check, so prepare for all three: the US airline interview set covers the HR and technical sides, and the CRM interview set the crew resource management questions. Atlas’s careers page describes international, long-haul flying to more than 330 airports in over 80 countries, so revise oceanic procedures, long-range navigation and fatigue, and the freight side of the job, dangerous goods and load limits. Do the paperwork first: a passport with at least 24 months to run and no travel restrictions, an FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit, your hours sorted by the kind of operation they were flown in, and, if you hold a restricted ATP, a clear view of what it lets you fly, set out under the requirements above.

For the interview itself, read the complete airline pilot interview guide and the Library’s competency-based pilot interviews and technical pilot interview questions. The Library’s commercial and airline transport pilot licenses explains the ATP, the restricted ATP and the ATP-CTP, and FAA Part 121 air carrier operations the rules an Atlas crew flies under. For the freight and long-haul side, read dangerous goods, cargo loading and floor limits, oceanic and North Atlantic operations and fatigue. The other two US cargo airlines on our jobs board are on FedEx Express and UPS Airlines pilot requirements, and the airlines flying freighters are on cargo pilot jobs. Check Atlas’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.

What we could not confirm

These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.

Common questions

Is Atlas Air hiring pilots? Unconfirmed at the last check, on 22 October 2026. Atlas’s careers site invites pilots to apply and to join its pilot talent community, but its First Officer Talent Community posting, in job-board copies dated as late as 9 May 2026, says Atlas is not currently hiring and has no timeline for resuming, and asks pilots to leave their details so Atlas can contact them when hiring resumes. Check the careers site before you apply.

How many hours do you need to fly for Atlas Air? 1,500 hours of total time, the minimum in Atlas’s First Officer postings as job boards copy them, with 2,500 hours of total time in a Part 121, 135, 91 or military environment preferred. You also need a current FAA ATP, or a restricted ATP as search results quote Atlas’s First Officer page, with an airplane multi-engine class rating.

Can you fly for Atlas Air with a restricted ATP? Atlas’s First Officer page, as search results quote it, accepts a current restricted or unrestricted FAA ATP, with a minimum age of 21 for the restricted ATP and 23 for the full one, but a September 2026 posting, as a job board relays it, gives ages 23 to 65, so ask Atlas whether it still takes restricted ATP holders. A restricted ATP carries pilot-in-command limitations, and under 14 CFR 121.436 a second in command in a flag or supplemental operation that requires three or more pilots must hold an ATP without them.

Does Atlas Air provide the type rating? Yes, as its postings put it: Atlas asks for no type rating when you apply and provides it in training, and Part 121 requires a second in command to hold the type rating as well as the ATP. Atlas gave its fleet as 113 Boeing 747s, 777s and 767s on 16 March 2026, when it ordered 20 Airbus A350 freighters for delivery from 2029 to 2034.

Where are Atlas Air pilots based? At the last check, on 22 October 2026, Atlas’s careers page named US crew domiciles including Anchorage, New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, Miami and Seattle, with gateway travel for commuting from home to base and company-paid hotels in training, in base, before and after trips and on reserve. It says base availability follows operational requirements.
