Japan Airlines Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, License and Hiring Process
Japan Airlines’ door for pilots from abroad is a contract with an agency rather than with JAL. CAE Parc Aviation recruits Boeing 787 First Officers who live outside Japan, and an overseas agency employs them and dispatches them to JAL on a five-year commuting contract, with 10 consecutive days off each month, based at Haneda or Narita (Aviation Wire, December 2025). At the last check, on 21 October 2026, CAE Parc’s listing for rated and non-type-rated 787 First Officers was open on a job board, posted or refreshed about 5 October 2026; JAL’s own careers pages refused our reader, so we could not confirm it there. The minimums are 4,000 hours with commercial airlines and 1,500 in command of aircraft of 55,000 kg or more, 1,000 hours on glass-cockpit aircraft, international passenger experience, a valid ATPL from an ICAO member state with a valid type rating and English at ICAO Level 4. There is no Captain entry: experienced Captains join as First Officers. Around the 787s, A350-1000s are replacing JAL’s 777-300ERs, and 737-8s are due to replace its 737-800s.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Is Japan Airlines hiring pilots now?
Recruiting at the last check on 21 October 2026 — First Officer seat: Recruiting; Captain seat: Not offered. Expatriate B787 First Officers, rated or non-type-rated, recruited by the agency CAE Parc Aviation on 5-year commuting contracts, based at Haneda or Narita: 4,000 h with commercial airlines, 1,500 h PIC on aircraft of 55 t or more, an ICAO ATPL with a type rating
What we found at the last check: At the last check, on 21 October 2026, CAE Parc Aviation’s listing for experienced rated and non-type-rated B787 First Officers for Japan Airlines was open to applications on a job board, posted or refreshed about 5 October 2026. JAL’s own careers pages refused our reader, so we could not confirm the campaign there; Aviation Wire reported it in December 2025, quoting JAL: the campaign is for pilots who live outside Japan, whom an overseas agency employs and dispatches to JAL.
How we checked
Read on 21 October 2026 through a GitHub runner (the sandbox cannot reach these sites): CAE Parc Aviation’s listing “B787 First Officers - Rated & Non-Type Rated” for Japan Airlines on aviationjobsearch.com (job 562198, shown as posted 16 days earlier, so about 5 October 2026, with an Apply button), which says CAE Parc is “exclusively accepting applications” and acts on behalf of JAL, with a 5-year contract with 10 consecutive days off a month, commuting only; and Aviation Wire’s article of 10 December 2025 (updated 12 December 2025), which reports the same campaign and terms and quotes JAL: CAE Parc handles the hiring, the campaign is for people living outside Japan, and an overseas agency employs the pilots and dispatches them to JAL. JAL’s own sites (the jal.com careers pages, jal.co.jp and press.jal.co.jp) refused the runner (HTTP 403), and CAE’s own job search loads its list by script, so the campaign could not be read on JAL’s or CAE’s own pages. Fleet from Aviation Wire, 8 June 2025 and 23 March 2026 (read directly). The previous check, on 21 September 2026, was from search results.
Requirements, as published
| Requirement | As published by the airline |
|---|---|
| License | A valid ATPL issued by an ICAO member state, with a valid type rating; a B787 rating is not required |
| Minimum hours | 4,000 h total flight time with commercial airlines; 1,500 h PIC on aircraft with MTOW of 55,000 kg or more; 1,000 h on EFIS (glass-cockpit) aircraft; international passenger flight experience |
| Type rating | B787 rated and non-type-rated pilots both accepted; a valid type rating on another type is required |
| Right to work | Not stated: an overseas agency employs you and dispatches you to JAL on a 5-year commuting contract, and the campaign is for people living outside Japan (Aviation Wire, December 2025); neither the listing nor the article says who obtains the Japanese visa |
| Medical | Not listed in the agency’s posting |
| English | ICAO Level 4 or above |
| Also | Last flight within the past 12 months preferred. Experienced Captains join as First Officers and may upgrade to Captain later if JAL approves. Commuting only, with 10 consecutive days off each month; accommodation, flight tickets and health insurance provided. Only shortlisted candidates are contacted, by email; no reply within four weeks means the application is not going forward |
Reading the requirements line by line
- 4,000 hours with commercial airlines. The listing asks for 4,000 hours of total flight time with commercial airlines, so, as worded, hours from flight training, instructing or private flying do not count toward it.
- 1,500 hours in command, on aircraft of 55,000 kg or more. The command time must be on aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 55,000 kg or more: check the certified maximum takeoff weight of each type you have commanded, on its type certificate data sheet, before you count it. In effect, this First Officer role is written for pilots who have already been Captains on airliners of that size, and Aviation Wire reported that experienced Captains join as First Officers, with a possible upgrade later if JAL approves.
- 1,000 hours on EFIS aircraft, and international passenger flying. The listing also asks for 1,000 hours on aircraft with an electronic flight instrument system, the glass cockpit, and for experience on international passenger flights.
- An ATPL and a type rating, but not necessarily the 787’s. You need a valid ATPL issued by an ICAO member state, with a valid type rating. Rated and non-type-rated 787 pilots are both accepted, so the rating you hold may be on another type.
- English at Level 4. ICAO Level 4, Operational, is the minimum ICAO sets for pilots who fly internationally, and the listing asks for no more.
- Recent flying preferred. A last flight within the past 12 months is preferred, not required.
Entry routes
- Contract First Officer B787 via CAE Parc Aviation, rated or non-type-rated: a 5-year commuting contract, based at Haneda or Narita (listing open on a job board, posted or refreshed about 5 October 2026)
- Direct entry Captain — not offered to pilots recruited from abroad: experienced Captains join as First Officers and may upgrade later if JAL approves
- Japanese pilot recruitment, including JAL’s own cadet route for new graduates, runs separately, in Japanese (not read)
How the contract works
The terms below are from CAE Parc’s listing, read on 21 October 2026, and from Aviation Wire’s report of 10 December 2025, which quotes JAL:
- Employer. An overseas agency employs you and dispatches you to JAL; CAE Parc Aviation handles the hiring, and the campaign is for people who live outside Japan.
- Term and roster. Five years, commuting only, with 10 consecutive days off each month, based at Haneda or Narita.
- What is provided. Accommodation, flight tickets and health insurance; the listing describes the pay only as an excellent package.
- Rank. Every pilot joins as a First Officer; an experienced Captain may upgrade to Captain later if JAL approves.
- Applying. You apply to CAE Parc. Only shortlisted candidates are contacted, by email, and if you have not heard within four weeks, your application is not going forward.
Neither source says who obtains the Japanese visa, or how Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau validates a foreign license, so ask CAE Parc before you accept an offer.
Japan Airlines beside the region’s airlines
Japan Airlines beside four other Asia-Pacific airlines on our jobs board, as recorded at each airline’s last check:
| Airline | Published minimum | Type rating | Status at last check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan Airlines | 4,000 h airline · 1,500 h PIC 55 t+ | B787 rated or non-rated | Recruiting (21 October 2026) |
| Peach Aviation | Not published | Not published | Recruiting (29 September 2026) |
| Cathay Pacific | 1,500 h (FO) · 250 h+ (SO) | Provided | Recruiting (21 September 2026) |
| Qantas Group (Qantas & QantasLink) | 500 h (QantasLink FO) | Provided | Recruiting (16 October 2026) |
| Singapore Airlines | 1,500 h on A350/A380 (FO) · 7,000 h (Capt) | Required (DE) · cadets trained | Recruiting (16 October 2026) |
Read the minimum with the type-rating column. JAL takes pilots without a 787 rating, but only with 1,500 hours in command of large aircraft, so its door suits experienced pilots changing type rather than First Officers building hours.
Selection process
The airline does not publish its selection stages in detail; expect an online application, screening against the published minimums, an interview and a simulator or aptitude assessment before the medical.
Bases and fleet
Bases: Tokyo Haneda · Tokyo Narita
Fleet: Boeing 787s: the fleet the contract First Officers join (CAE Parc Aviation’s listing, October 2026) · A350-1000s replacing the 777-300ERs: 13 ordered, nine in the fleet in June 2025 (Aviation Wire, 8 June 2025) · 777-300ERs: 11 left in June 2025, some kept longer than planned against late deliveries (Aviation Wire, 8 June 2025) · 737-800s, to be replaced by 38 737-8s entering service from fiscal 2027 (Aviation Wire, 23 March 2026) · On order: more A350-900s and 787-9s, deliveries from fiscal 2027 (Aviation Wire, 8 June 2025)
The fleet the contract pilots join, and what is changing
The contract pilots fly JAL’s 787s. Around them, the fleet is changing (Aviation Wire, 8 June 2025 and 23 March 2026):
- A350-1000s for the 777-300ERs. JAL ordered 13 A350-1000s to replace its 13 777-300ERs. The A350-1000 entered service in January 2024; nine were in the fleet in June 2025, and all 13 were expected as early as fiscal 2026 (April 2026 to March 2027). The 777-300ERs began to retire in August 2024, with 11 left in June 2025, when JAL said it would keep some longer as insurance against late deliveries.
- More A350-900s and 787-9s are on order, with deliveries from fiscal 2027, for international routes centered on North America, Asia and India.
- 737-8s for the 737-800s. JAL has 38 737-8s on order, to be delivered during fiscal 2026 and to enter service from fiscal 2027, replacing the 737-800s that fly mainly domestic routes.
How to prepare
The contract pilots fly the 787, so the B787 bank is the core preparation whether you hold the rating or not: without it, the bank’s systems questions are a way to start on the type’s no-bleed architecture and fly-by-wire flight controls before training. The ATPL theory banks cover the performance, meteorology and navigation of long-haul flying, and the CRM interview set the crew resource management questions an airline assessment asks. CAE Parc’s listing does not describe the selection stages, and we could not read JAL’s own pages; the listing says that only shortlisted candidates are contacted, by email, within four weeks, so prepare for the usual shape, an interview and a simulator check, before you apply rather than after. Count your logbook the way the listing does: only time with commercial airlines toward the 4,000 hours, only command time on aircraft of at least 55,000 kg maximum takeoff weight toward the 1,500, and time on glass-cockpit aircraft toward the 1,000.
Japan Airlines has no interview guide on v1prep yet, so for the selection read the complete airline pilot interview guide and the Library’s competency-based pilot interviews and airline simulator assessment. For the aircraft, start with the Library’s Boeing 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10, 787 no-bleed architecture and 787 flight controls; its class and type ratings explains what a new type rating involves, and EFIS what makes a glass cockpit. Two other large Asian airlines are on Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines pilot requirements. Check Japan Airlines’ entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- Researched on 21 October 2026 without a read of JAL’s own careers pages, which refused our reader: from CAE Parc Aviation’s listing on a job board and the Japanese aviation press. Confirm the vacancy is still open before you apply.
- Who obtains the Japanese visa or status of residence for a contract pilot: neither the listing nor Aviation Wire says
- Japanese JCAB license conversion requirements and timeline for a foreign ATPL holder, or whether a validation is used instead
- The selection stages: CAE Parc’s listing does not describe them, and JAL’s own pages could not be read
- Pay: the listing says only “excellent pay package”; salary guides’ figures are not JAL’s
- The current terms of JAL’s recruitment of Japanese pilots, including its cadet route for new graduates, published in Japanese on JAL’s site, which we could not read
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.
Common questions
