JetBlue Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
JetBlue hires First Officers onto its all-Airbus fleet in two ways: directly, through a posting on its careers site that asks for no type rating, and through its Gateway pathways, which take pilots from ab initio, university, military helicopter, crewmember or family starts to a conditional First Officer offer. The published minimums are an unrestricted FAA ATP with airplane multi-engine ratings, 1,500 hours total with at least 500 in fixed-wing airplanes, and a current First Class medical, with no visa sponsorship; a bachelor’s degree and 3,500 hours are preferred, not required. At the last check, on 14 October 2026, JetBlue’s First Officer posting, listed at Orlando, was open to applications, with no posting or closing date shown, and its First Officer page listed roles at Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK, Los Angeles and Orlando. Its fleet stood at 296 aircraft on 30 June 2026: 129 A320s, 102 A321s and 65 A220-300s.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. How we checked
Read directly on JetBlue’s own pages on 14 October 2026. The First Officer posting on careers.jetblue.com (Orlando, FL 32827, job page 1437544500) was open, with Apply buttons and no posting or closing date. It asks for a high school diploma or GED; a valid, unrestricted FAA ATP with airplane category and multi-engine class ratings; 1,500 h total time with at least 500 h in fixed-wing airplanes; a current FAA First Class medical; an FCC radiotelephone operator’s permit; a US passport, or a US permanent resident card with a foreign passport and the visas needed to enter and leave all JetBlue destinations without restriction, with at least six months’ validity at application and valid throughout training and employment; three reference letters from pilots who can attest to the candidate’s flying; complete and continuous fluency in written and spoken English; a valid US driver’s licence with a driving record that meets JetBlue’s insurance standards; a ten-year background check and pre-employment drug test; and US work authorisation, with no visa sponsorship. Preferred: a bachelor’s degree, letters of recommendation from current JetBlue pilots, 3,500 h or more total time in aircraft (turbine helicopter time included, simulator and flight engineer time excluded), more than 1,000 h fixed-wing turbine PIC, more than 1,000 h in aircraft with EFIS or FMS, and more than 200 h in the last 12 months. The posting says that using ChatGPT or any other automated tool during the interview process disqualifies a candidate. JetBlue’s First Officer page (careers.jetblue.com/go/First-Officer/8044500/) lists roles at BOS, FLL, JFK, LAX and MCO. JetBlue’s Gateways site (jetbluegateways.com: the Select, University, RTP, Flex and Family pages and the FAQs), read the same day: SkyWarrior Flight Training in Pensacola is the Gateway Select and RTP training partner; applications are taken during a designated period, without dates; Gateway Select asks for a First Class medical certificate and a US passport (or permanent resident card) at application and an age of 23 by the end of the programme, charges no application fee and USD 116 for the assessment, and gives SkyWarrior’s tuition as about USD 120,000 without housing; new-hire pilots bid for their aircraft in new-hire training. Fleet from JetBlue’s second-quarter 2026 investor update (read the same day) and its Form 10-Q for the quarter to 30 June 2026 (search results); the San Juan base from JetBlue’s release of May 2024 and an EFE report of December 2024 (search results). Review of 14 October 2026: status set to Recruiting from the open posting itself; the ATP must be unrestricted; Newark, listed on ALPA’s JetBlue page, is not among the bases on JetBlue’s First Officer page, and neither is San Juan.

Reading the requirements line by line
- 1,500 hours, 500 of them fixed-wing. The posting asks for 1,500 hours of total flight time, of which at least 500 must be in fixed-wing airplanes, so a pilot whose time is mostly in helicopters needs those 500 airplane hours as well as the total.
- An unrestricted ATP, held. JetBlue asks for a valid ATP certificate with airplane category and multi-engine class ratings, marked unrestricted, not a Commercial and the ATP written. A restricted ATP under 14 CFR 61.160, with its lower totals of 750 hours for military pilots and 1,000 or 1,250 with a qualifying aviation degree, does not meet the posting as written.
- Preferred, not required. The preferred qualifications are a bachelor’s degree, letters of recommendation from current JetBlue pilots, 3,500 hours or more of total time in aircraft (turbine helicopter time counts; simulator and flight engineer time do not), more than 1,000 hours as pilot in command of fixed-wing turbine aircraft, more than 1,000 hours in aircraft with electronic flight instruments or a flight management system, and more than 200 hours in the last 12 months. A pilot without them still meets the minimums.
- Three pilot references. The application asks for three reference letters from pilots who can personally attest to your flying skills. Letters from current JetBlue pilots are among the preferred qualifications rather than a requirement.
- Passport and right to work. You must already be authorised to work in the US, since JetBlue does not sponsor visas, and hold a US passport, or a US permanent resident card with a foreign passport and any visas needed, that allows unrestricted travel to all JetBlue destinations, with at least six months’ validity when you apply and valid throughout training and employment.
- The other papers. A high school diploma or GED, an FCC radiotelephone operator’s permit, complete fluency in written and spoken English, a valid US driver’s licence with a driving record that meets JetBlue’s insurance standards, a ten-year background check and a pre-employment drug test.

The Gateway pathways
JetBlue’s Gateways site sets out its pilot pathways, routes towards a First Officer seat at JetBlue for pilots at different starting points. Each ends in a conditional First Officer offer that holds once the pilot meets the programme’s requirements and passes a background check, drug and alcohol testing, a PRIA records review and final approval by JetBlue’s Pilot Hiring Committee. As read at the last check, on 14 October 2026:
- Gateway Select, ab initio, for candidates with little or no flying experience: anyone who has gone beyond a private pilot certificate is not eligible. The programme lasts about three and a half years, full time in Pensacola, Florida: flight training from private pilot through the Commercial multi-engine certificate and the instructor ratings (CFI, CFII and MEI) at SkyWarrior Flight Training, an FAA Part 141 school; an airline preparation course with jet training at JetBlue University in Orlando; and a period as a flight instructor with SkyWarrior to build the time for an ATP without restriction, after which graduates join JetBlue’s First Officer new-hire training. You upload a First Class medical certificate and a US passport, or a US permanent resident card with a foreign passport and visas, when you apply, and must be 23, the minimum age for the ATP, by the end of the programme; a high school diploma or GED is the only educational requirement. There is no application fee; applicants invited to the online assessment pay USD 116, and those who pass it go on to interviews and further testing. JetBlue’s FAQ gives SkyWarrior’s tuition as about USD 120,000, not counting housing, with financing, the GI Bill and VA benefits arranged through SkyWarrior.
- Gateway University, launched in 2008, for students with at least an instrument rating, or flight instructors, at JetBlue’s partner colleges and universities (among them Embry-Riddle, Florida Tech, Kent State, the University of North Dakota and Vaughn College), who earn a conditional First Officer offer after an application and an interview. After graduating, the pilot instructs at the school for at least 500 hours of dual given, then flies for Cape Air, JSX, Tradewind Aviation or a Part 121 regional airline to reach the flight time; JetBlue’s FAQ puts the whole route at four to six years, and no further JetBlue interview follows. Applicants who have already been accepted into a Gateway programme cannot apply, and there is no visa sponsorship.
- Gateway RTP, launched in 2023 for US military-trained helicopter pilots who have left the armed forces with an honourable discharge, or will within 12 months: at least 750 hours of total flight time as a pilot, counted without any sortie or military conversion, three letters of recommendation, and the age of 23 by the time you join JetBlue. Those selected receive a conditional offer before they start; the fixed-wing training, from private pilot through the Commercial multi-engine certificate, is with SkyWarrior Flight Training, followed by a jet transition course at JetBlue University and the ATP-CTP course. JetBlue estimates the cost at USD 25,000 to 65,000, depending on experience and the flight time needed.
- Gateway Flex, for JetBlue crewmembers with at least a year’s service, who may take up to a year’s leave and then train at a school of their choice, and Gateway Family, for the children, stepchildren, spouses, siblings and parents of crewmembers, who must start with no more than a Commercial certificate and 500 hours. Both build their time with Cape Air, JSX, Tradewind Aviation or a Part 121 regional airline and must meet every requirement within five years of the conditional offer.
Gateway Select, RTP, Flex and Family applications are taken during designated periods, and the site gives no dates, so read the current terms on JetBlue’s Gateways site before you apply.
JetBlue and the other US airlines

Selection process
- Online application on JetBlue’s careers site, with three reference letters from pilots
- Interview process (the posting says that using ChatGPT or any other automated tool during it disqualifies a candidate)
- Ten-year background check and pre-employment drug test
Bases and fleet
Bases: First Officer roles at Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK, Los Angeles and Orlando (JetBlue’s First Officer careers page, 14 October 2026) · San Juan, Puerto Rico: a pilot and inflight crew base announced by JetBlue in May 2024 for up to 120 pilots and opened in December 2024 (EFE); JetBlue’s First Officer page does not list it
Fleet: 296 aircraft at 30 June 2026, including aircraft temporarily out of service, four of them because of the Pratt & Whitney engine groundings (JetBlue investor update, second quarter 2026) · Airbus A320: 129 · Airbus A321, including the A321neo and the long-range A321LR: 102 · Airbus A220-300: 65 · On firm order at 30 June 2026: 35 A220s and 45 A321neos, 42 of the A321neos due after 2030, and options for 20 more A220-300s from 2028 to 2030 (JetBlue Form 10-Q and investor update)
How to prepare
JetBlue flies only Airbus types, the A320 and A321 and the A220-300, and its Gateways FAQ says new-hire pilots bid for their aircraft in new-hire training, so work the A320 bank, which covers the A321, and the A220 bank side by side until you know your fleet. JetBlue asks for the unrestricted ATP certificate itself, not just the experience: if yours is still ahead of you, the ATP bank covers the ATM written test, which you can sit only after the ATP-CTP course, and the Part 121, transport performance and turbine-systems questions a US technical interview draws on. JetBlue does not publish its interview stages for direct-entry First Officers, so prepare for a technical and a behavioural interview with the US airline interview set, and the crew resource management questions with the CRM interview set; the posting warns that using ChatGPT or any other automated tool during the interview process disqualifies a candidate. Do the paperwork first: line up three reference letters from pilots who know your flying, and total your logbook the way the posting counts it, with fixed-wing time on its own line and, for the preferred figures, total time in aircraft (turbine helicopter time included, simulator and flight engineer time left out) and fixed-wing turbine time as pilot in command.
For the interview itself, read the complete airline pilot interview guide and the Library’s competency-based pilot interviews. If the ATP is still ahead of you, our FAA ATP written test guide covers the ATP-CTP and the test, and the restricted ATP explained sets out the 750, 1,000 and 1,250-hour routes, which do not meet JetBlue’s requirement of an unrestricted ATP. For the Gateway routes, our cadet pilot programmes page sets JetBlue’s schemes beside other airlines’, and the Library’s pilot career pathways and flight instructors and examiners cover the instructing and time-building years that Gateway University and Gateway Select build in. For the A220, the Library’s A220 family and limitations is a place to start. To compare another US airline, read Delta Air Lines pilot requirements. Check JetBlue’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
What we could not confirm
- The ‘Recruiting’ status rests on a First Officer posting that was open to applications on 14 October 2026 but shows no posting or closing date. Check the careers site before you apply.
- JetBlue’s interview stages for direct-entry First Officers: the posting mentions an interview process but does not describe it
- When the next Gateway application periods open: JetBlue’s Gateways site says applications are taken during a designated period without giving dates
- Whether San Juan is still a pilot base: JetBlue opened a pilot and inflight crew base there in December 2024, but its First Officer page lists roles only at Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK, Los Angeles and Orlando
- The experience of recent hires: pilot job sites and preparation providers report figures well above the 1,500 h minimum, which JetBlue does not publish
These points are not published clearly by the airline. Treat them as leads, not facts, and confirm them on the careers page: careers page.
Common questions
Is JetBlue hiring pilots? Yes, at the last check, on 14 October 2026: JetBlue’s careers site had a First Officer posting open to applications, listed at Orlando, with no posting or closing date shown, and its First Officer page listed roles at Boston, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK, Los Angeles and Orlando. Postings open and close without notice, so check the careers site before you apply.
How many hours do you need to fly for JetBlue? 1,500 hours of total flight time, at least 500 of them in fixed-wing airplanes, with an unrestricted FAA ATP and a First Class medical. JetBlue lists 3,500 hours or more of total time, more than 1,000 hours as pilot in command of fixed-wing turbine aircraft and more than 200 hours in the last 12 months among its preferred qualifications, not its requirements.
Do you need a degree to fly for JetBlue? No. The First Officer posting asks for a high school diploma or GED and lists a bachelor’s degree as preferred, and a high school diploma or GED is the only educational requirement for Gateway Select.
What is JetBlue Gateway Select? JetBlue’s ab initio pathway, for candidates who hold no more than a private pilot certificate. It lasts about three and a half years, full time in Pensacola, Florida: flight training and instructor ratings with SkyWarrior Flight Training, an airline preparation course at JetBlue University and a period as a flight instructor, ending in JetBlue’s First Officer new-hire training once you hold an unrestricted ATP. At the last check, on 14 October 2026, JetBlue’s FAQ gave the tuition as about USD 120,000, not counting housing. Applications are taken in designated periods, and we could not confirm when the next one opens.
Can a non-US citizen fly for JetBlue? Only with the right to work in the US already. JetBlue does not sponsor visas, and its posting asks for a US passport, or a US permanent resident card with a foreign passport and any visas needed, that allows unrestricted travel to all JetBlue destinations, with at least six months’ validity when you apply.
