TAP Air Portugal Pilot Interview Prep: Process, Sim, Questions (2026 Guide)
TAP Air Portugal is Portugal's flag carrier, with a fleet that mixes Airbus narrowbody (A319, A320, A321) and widebody (A330ceo, A330neo, A321LR) operations. Strong transatlantic and Africa-focused network with major bases in Lisbon and Porto. This guide covers the recruitment process, sim assessment, technical content, and language considerations.
About TAP Air Portugal
TAP operates approximately 100 aircraft across narrowbody and widebody: A319/A320/A321 for Europe and short-haul Africa, A321LR/neo for thinner long-haul, A330ceo/neo for transatlantic and African routes. The combination means TAP pilots can transition from narrowbody to widebody within the same airline — an unusual career path in European aviation.
Bases: Lisbon (LIS) is the main hub by far, with Porto (OPO) as the secondary base. The route network emphasises Brazil (extensive Brazilian network), Africa (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Senegal), the US (BOS, EWR, JFK, MIA), and Europe.
Operating language is Portuguese in domestic operations and English internationally. Non-Portuguese speakers can apply but face additional language assessment. Working Portuguese is strongly preferred.
Recruitment stages
| Stage | Format |
|---|---|
| 1. Online application | CV, motivation, hours/ratings |
| 2. Online assessment | Psychometric battery |
| 3. Sim assessment | A320 sim, ~90 min |
| 4. Panel interview | HR + line captain, Portuguese and English |
Sim assessment
Standard A320 sim assessment at the TAP training centre in Lisbon. Manual handling, raw data flying, ILS approach, possibly an engine failure or unusual attitude recovery. Same fundamentals as every other airline sim — smooth handling, good scan, structured CRM.
HR interview
Bilingual (Portuguese and English) panel interview with an HR specialist and a line captain. STAR competency questions plus scenarios. TAP-specific themes:
- Why TAP and not another European carrier?
- Long-haul interest and willingness — many positions involve eventual long-haul
- Portuguese language commitment — even if you don't speak it now, are you committed to learning?
- Cultural awareness — TAP's Portuguese/Brazilian/African network demands cultural sensitivity
- Stamina for long-haul rosters — distinct from European-only operations
Technical questions
- A320 hydraulics — see our hydraulic system guide
- Flight control laws — FBW guide
- FLEX takeoff — FLEX guide
- ETOPS — TAP flies extensive ETOPS
- Long-haul fuel planning concepts
- Hot/high performance — Portugal/Spain/Africa summer ops
Common pitfalls
- Weak Portuguese — make at least basic effort; total absence is a disadvantage
- Manual handling — same theme everywhere
- "Interest in long-haul" without specifics — talk about specific TAP routes you find compelling
- Generic motivation — TAP is small enough that they expect you to have done research
