Edelweiss Pilot Interview Prep: Stages, Sim, Questions (2026 Guide)

Last updated: 18 October 2026

Published Oct 2026~15 min readZurich · A320 and A350

Edelweiss, the Swiss leisure airline of the Lufthansa Group, recruits type-rated Airbus pilots into Zurich, and it publishes its selection in an assessment document dated 2022: a review of your application, an assessment day with a group exercise, psychometric tests, a psychological interview and an apparatus test, a medical, a company interview at its headquarters, a half-day session in an A320 simulator and a board decision, with the four stages between the application and the board in an order that may vary. At the last check, on 18 October 2026, search results showed its Direct Entry First Officer postings on the A320, asking for 1,800 hours on the A320 and offering a fast track to the A350, and on the A350, and a copy of its vacancies page archived in 2026 also listed a freelance A350 Commander. Both First Officer postings ask for German: C1 for the A350, and very good German for the A320. This guide sets out what each posting asks for and how to prepare for each stage.

Note for pilots rated on another Airbus: the 2022 document puts the simulator session in an A320 for every First Officer applicant, and the A350 posting says its First Officers also fly the A320 after some time, under Edelweiss’s mixed fleet flying, so the A320 belongs in your preparation whichever First Officer posting you answer. A pilot rated only on a Boeing or an Embraer meets none of the postings as published.

At the last check, on 18 October 2026, search results showed Edelweiss’s cockpit vacancies page and its Direct Entry First Officer postings on the A320, with a fast track to the A350, and on the A350; a copy of the page archived in 2026 also listed a Direct Entry Freelance Commander A350 and the ab-initio route. We could not read the live page or the Lufthansa Group portal ourselves, or confirm that each posting is still open. Check the airline pilot jobs board for the current position.

About Edelweiss

A Zurich leisure airline, all Airbus

Edelweiss was founded in 1995, is based at Zurich Airport and has belonged to the Lufthansa Group since 1 November 2008 (Keystone-SDA, January 2025). It flies holiday routes with the A320 family, whose first A320neo joined in April 2026 (Air Data News, April 2026), and on long haul the A340-300 and the A350-900 that is replacing it: its fleet page, as search results showed it on 18 October 2026, lists four A350s, with two more due by the end of 2026, beside three A340-300s. In January 2025, as its first A350s were due, Edelweiss said its growing fleet would create 350 jobs (Keystone-SDA). Every pilot route is based in Zurich.

Edelweiss is a separate employer within the Group, with its own postings, and it takes applications only through the Lufthansa Group portal. In its assessment document of 2022, Edelweiss reviews your application itself and then registers you for the assessment at the SWISS Flight Crew Assessment Center, and its FAQ, as search results showed it, says that it has no access to the results of other Lufthansa Group assessments, so they are not credited: you go through the assessment for Edelweiss or SWISS. For people with no license, its ab-initio airline pilot route trains within the Group, at the European Flight Academy or Lufthansa Aviation Training Switzerland (its vacancies page, archived 2026); we could not read the terms of its factsheet.

The First Officer postings also ask for German, at C1 for the A350 and very good German for the A320, and English at B2 or ICAO Level 4; an EASA Class 1; Swiss or EU-27/EFTA citizenship, as the postings’ copies give it; and paperwork that proves your career: the last five years fully documented, with employment certificates and diplomas, and complete proof of your flying experience, including current simulator and line checks. Edelweiss’s application FAQ asks for your flying and language certificates with the application.

The hours are counted on type, not in total. Time on other aircraft does not count toward the 1,800 hours on the A320, or toward the 1,000 on the A350 or the 2,000 on the A330, however much of it you have, and an A350 or A330 rating that expired more than a year ago does not meet the A350 posting as written. The ratings the postings name are the A320, the A330 and the A350: an A340 rating on its own is not among them. Total your logbook by type before you apply, and show the figures that way in your application (the Library’s guide to the pilot CV and application covers the flight hours table and time on type).

What sets Edelweiss apart for a pilot

The details that change who should apply, and how

The six published stages

As Edelweiss’s assessment document of 2022 and its FAQ give them

Edelweiss publishes its First Officer selection in an assessment document dated 2022, which we read on 18 October 2026, and in FAQs, which we read in search results the same day. The FAQ says the assessment tests cognitive abilities, personality traits, operational and technical competencies, and social competencies based on crew resource management, and that preparation material comes with the invitation to each stage. The table follows the document’s order, which it says may vary for the four stages between the application and the board. The second column is preparation advice, not a description of Edelweiss’s format.

StageWhat to prepare
1. Application, through the Lufthansa Group portal: Edelweiss reviews it, then registers you for the assessment at the SWISS Flight Crew Assessment CenterThe German certificate, your hours totaled by type, five years of employment certificates and diplomas, and your latest simulator and line checks
2. Assessment day (one day): group exercise, psychometrics, psychological interview, apparatus test and an item the document calls ITRA few weeks of timed practice: mental arithmetic, reasoning, spatial orientation, memory, multitasking and hand-eye coordination; eight to ten true STAR stories; practice at working in a group against the clock
3. Medical check (two hours), with a test for psychoactive substancesAn EASA Class 1, and an honest account of any medication you take (the Library covers alcohol, drugs and medication)
4. Company interview (one hour), at Edelweiss headquarters (The Circle, Zurich Airport)Your reasons for Edelweiss, the posting and Zurich, and two or three questions of your own
5. Simulator session (half a day), in an A320 simulatorA320 handling in normal law, raw-data flying, and briefings and callouts in both the pilot flying and pilot monitoring roles
6. Board decisionNothing to prepare: the board meets monthly, so allow for the wait

Two things follow from the document. The assessment day, the medical, the company interview and the simulator may come in a different order from the table’s, so prepare for all four from the start rather than one at a time. And the board comes last and meets monthly, so allow for a wait after your final stage. Edelweiss does not pay your travel, accommodation or meals for the assessment, according to its FAQ.

The assessment day

Edelweiss’s document lists five items for the day: a group exercise, psychometrics, a psychological interview, an apparatus test and an item it calls ITR, which it does not explain. The psychometrics test cognitive abilities and personality, two of the four areas the FAQ names: expect timed reasoning, spatial and memory tasks and a personality questionnaire. The apparatus test, in pilot selection, usually means a psychomotor test of how precisely you control a moving display with your hands and often your feet (the Library covers psychomotor coordination among the pilot aptitude tests). The psychological interview and the group exercise are described below. Practice the skills rather than one product: daily mental arithmetic without a calculator, reading instruments against the clock and short multitasking sessions over a few weeks. A personality questionnaire has no right answers to learn, so answer it quickly and honestly, and read the preparation material that comes with your invitation closely.

The A320 simulator session

Half a day, in an A320

Edelweiss’s simulator stage is half a day in an A320 simulator, in its assessment document of 2022, which gives no profile and says the preparation material comes with the invitation. Prepare for the shape most airline simulator assessments share: in the Library’s description of the airline simulator assessment, a briefing on the numbers to fly, then upper air work, a hold, an ILS to minimums with a missed approach and sometimes an engine failure, flown as one of a two-pilot crew. Because the type is named in advance, its basic flows, callouts and flight mode annunciations repay study, and a type-rated candidate should expect standard operating procedures to be judged as well as handling.

What to practice

In the Library’s description, for experienced pilots the emphasis of the session typically moves toward managing the flight and the crew. Errors are expected; what counts is whether they are noticed, said aloud and corrected.

The interviews and the group exercise

Psychological, company, and in German

Edelweiss holds two interviews: a psychological interview on the assessment day and a one-hour company interview at its headquarters. The material we found does not describe the format of either, so prepare for the forms most airlines use. Expect competency questions, which ask for a real past event rather than an opinion: a mistake you made, a disagreement with a Captain, a time you saw something unsafe, a decision on incomplete information. Answer with the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result), keep each story short and true, and show ownership rather than blame. Prepare eight to ten stories that cover the common themes, and raise anything in your record yourself, such as a failed check: an interviewer who finds it later will assume it was hidden. The Library sets out the method in competency-based pilot interviews.

The psychological interview

It sits on the assessment day beside the psychometric tests, and personality traits are among the areas the FAQ says the assessment tests. Expect questions about your motivation, how you work in a crew and how you handle pressure and disagreement, and answer them as you answer the personality questionnaire: honestly, since airlines read the questionnaire alongside the interviews and group exercises, which test the same qualities in other ways (the Library covers pilot aptitude tests and personality and motivation).

Questions particular to Edelweiss

The group exercise

A group exercise puts several candidates around a planning or prioritization task against the clock, while assessors watch how each one contributes, listens and helps the group reach a decision, not who reaches the answer, which fits the social competencies based on crew resource management that the FAQ names. Dominating the discussion and staying silent both leave them without evidence. Make sure everyone understands the task, make your point once with a reason, build on other people’s ideas, bring a quieter member in, keep an eye on the time, and support the decision once it is made.

Technical questions

The A320, the A350, and the theory underneath

A technical interview generally covers three things: the type you fly or will fly, ATPL theory asked as open questions, and operational scenarios you talk through. In the 2022 document every First Officer applicant flies the A320 in the simulator session, so start there, then add the type of your posting. If you do not know an answer, say so, then explain what you do know and where you would find the rest: panels generally score honesty first, then reasoning, then raw knowledge.

A320 questions to practice

  1. Normal, alternate and direct law: what takes you from one to the next, and which protections do you lose at each step? (see A320 flight control laws and protections)
  2. What is alpha floor, and when is it not available? (see fly-by-wire and flight envelope protection)
  3. The A320 family shares one type rating: what changes for the crew between the ceo and the neo, now that Edelweiss flies both? (see the A320ceo to neo course and its module comparing the A319, A320 and A321)

A350 and long-haul questions to practice

v1prep has no A350 bank and no A340 bank. The Airbus principles the A350 shares with the A320 family are covered: fly-by-wire, the control laws and hard envelope protection (see fly-by-wire). For the long-haul side, where Edelweiss serves more than 20 destinations in the Americas, Africa and Asia (Keystone-SDA, January 2025):

  1. Extended diversion time operations for twin-engined airplanes: the threshold time, the entry point and critical fuel (see ETOPS)
  2. A North Atlantic crossing: how is the oceanic clearance given, and what is the Mach number technique? (see oceanic and North Atlantic operations)

ATPL topics worth refreshing

  1. V1, VR and V2, and what V1 commits you to (see takeoff speeds)
  2. The go-around: thrust, attitude, flap and gear, and who may call it (see go-around and missed approach)
  3. Low-visibility operations and ILS categories (see low visibility operations)
  4. Decode a METAR and TAF (drill it with our ATPL meteorology questions)
  5. Airspace classes and the rules of the air (see our ATPL air law questions)

Where Edelweiss candidates go wrong

The patterns that end strong applications
  1. German below the posting’s level, or no certificate. The A350 posting asks for C1, and Edelweiss’s application FAQ asks for your language certificates with the application, not after an invitation.
  2. Counting total time. The minimums are on type: 1,800 hours on the A320, or 1,000 on the A350 or 2,000 on the A330.
  3. A rating left to lapse. The A350 posting accepts an A350 or A330 rating expired for no more than a year; beyond that, it is not met as written.
  4. Gaps in the paper trail. Five years fully documented, and current simulator and line checks: collect them for every employer before you apply.
  5. Flying the A320 as if it were your own type. A330 and A350 pilots should revise the A320’s flows and numbers before the simulator session.
  6. Arriving cold at the assessment day. It is a full day of tests, and a weak result in the psychometrics or the apparatus test can end the selection there, so practice for weeks, not days.
  7. Dominating, or disappearing, in the group exercise. Assessors watch how you contribute, listen and help the group decide; both extremes fail that test.
  8. Stories and records that do not match. Competency answers that do not survive a follow-up question, or figures that differ from your logbook. Across the industry, the commonest reason an offer is withdrawn is a gap between what a candidate declared and what the records show.

From application to a course date

What is known, and what is not

Edelweiss says its selection normally takes about three to four months, depending on its assessment capacity and on the candidate (its FAQ, as search results showed it on 18 October 2026), and its assessment document of 2022 gives the length of each stage. What is known:

PhaseWhat is known
ApplicationThrough the Lufthansa Group portal; no closing date that we could confirm in the copies of the postings
Assessment dayOne day
MedicalTwo hours, with a test for psychoactive substances
Company interviewOne hour, at the head office at Zurich Airport
Simulator sessionHalf a day, in an A320 simulator
OrderThe four stages above may come in a different order
BoardThe last stage; it meets monthly
Course dateNot published for First Officers; the vacancies page, archived in 2026, gave operator conversion courses from spring 2026 for the freelance Commander
CostsTravel, accommodation and meals for the assessment at your own expense

Plan for three to four months, not a date. While you wait, keep your rating current, since the A350 posting accepts one expired for no more than a year, and keep your German and your theory sharp.

Edelweiss pilot recruitment: common questions

From Edelweiss’s assessment document and FAQ and job boards’ copies of its postings, read on 18 October 2026

The hours, type rating, license, language and citizenship rules are on our Edelweiss pilot requirements page; the questions below are about the selection itself.

What is the Edelweiss pilot selection process?

Six stages, as Edelweiss’s assessment document of 2022 gives them: an application through the Lufthansa Group portal, which Edelweiss reviews before registering you for the assessment at the SWISS Flight Crew Assessment Center; an assessment day with a group exercise, psychometrics, a psychological interview and an apparatus test; a medical check that includes a test for psychoactive substances; a company interview at Edelweiss headquarters at Zurich Airport; half a day in an A320 simulator; and a board decision, taken monthly. The order of the four stages between the application and the board may vary.

What happens on the Edelweiss assessment day?

A group exercise, psychometric tests, a psychological interview and an apparatus test, in one day; the document also lists an item it calls ITR, without explaining it. Edelweiss’s FAQ says the assessment tests cognitive abilities, personality traits, operational and technical competencies and social competencies based on crew resource management, and that preparation material comes with the invitation to each stage. Practice timed aptitude tests and coordination tasks for a few weeks, and answer the personality questions quickly and honestly.

What is the Edelweiss simulator session like?

Half a day in an A320 simulator, for every First Officer applicant in Edelweiss’s assessment document of 2022. Edelweiss publishes no profile, so prepare for the usual shape: a briefing on the numbers to fly, upper air work, a hold, an ILS to minimums with a missed approach and sometimes an engine failure, flown as a crew, with the A320’s flows, callouts and standard procedures in both roles.

Do I need German for the Edelweiss selection?

Yes. The A350 First Officer posting asks for German at C1 and the A320 posting for very good German, with English at B2 or ICAO Level 4 in both, and Edelweiss’s application FAQ asks for your language certificates with the application. Rehearse your competency and technical answers in German as well as English.

How long does the Edelweiss selection take?

About three to four months, according to Edelweiss’s FAQ, depending on its assessment capacity and on the candidate, and its board meets monthly. Edelweiss does not pay your travel, accommodation or meals for the assessment, and it has no access to the results of other Lufthansa Group assessments, so it does not credit them.

Drill the A320 and ATPL theory

v1prep covers 9,300+ questions across A320 systems and ATPL theory, every answer cited to its FCOM, FCTM or EASA source: the type of Edelweiss’s simulator session and of its short- and medium-haul fleet, the Airbus principles its A350 shares, and the theory a technical panel leans on.
