Delta Air Lines Pilot Interview Prep: Steps, Panel, Questions (2026 Guide)
LAST UPDATED: 13 OCTOBER 2026
Delta hires pilots as First Officers only, takes applications continuously, and sets out its process in eight steps: an online application; a review of every application by two members of its Application Review Team; an interview stage that ends in a conditional job offer; pre-employment screenings; a two-week indoctrination; a wing ceremony; training; and “Take Flight”, the start of flying for Delta. The interview stage is where the selection happens: the Aon online assessment, then a panel interview and the MMPI-2 personality inventory at Delta’s headquarters in Atlanta, then a virtual interview with a Delta psychologist. There is no simulator assessment in the steps Delta publishes. This guide sets out each step and how to prepare for it.
Note on the minimums: Delta asks for 1,500 hours of documented flight time, with 250 hours as pilot in command or second in command and 50 multi-engine, an FAA Commercial with an instrument rating, a current ATP written and the ATP aeronautical experience. In its hiring FAQ, as we read it in search results, the 1,000 hours of fixed-wing turbine time are listed as preferred, not required, so less turbine time does not rule you out as written; some job boards relaying Delta’s postings still show the 1,000 hours as a minimum, so confirm with Delta how it applies the figure to you.
At the last check, on 13 October 2026, Delta was taking First Officer applications continuously through its own portal, with no closing date and no hiring pause reported; it publishes no external Captain route. We read Delta’s pages in search results rather than on the portal itself. Check the airline pilot jobs board for the current position.
About Delta
Delta flies a mixed fleet: the A220, the A320 family, the A330, the A350, the 717, the 737, the 757 and the 767. Its pilot bases, as listed at the last check, are Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis–St Paul, New York (JFK and LaGuardia), Salt Lake City and Seattle. Delta does not require a type rating: it trains new hires on their fleet type, so the selection is not built around one aircraft.
Every pilot joins as a First Officer. Delta publishes no external Captain route: its Captains come from its own First Officers by seniority, so a pilot who already commands elsewhere applies through the same door and should be ready to say why. Besides direct entry, Delta runs the Propel Pilot Career Path Program, with college, company and community pathways that lead to a Delta seat, and a military pathway. This guide is about the direct-entry selection; a Propel participant should check the steps of his or her own pathway.
Which door your hours fit
| Route | Published minimum |
|---|---|
| Direct entry First Officer | 1,500 h total documented flight time, 250 h PIC or SIC in the airplane category and 50 h multi-engine; 1,000 h fixed-wing turbine preferred; an FAA Commercial with instrument rating, a current ATP written and the ATP aeronautical experience |
| Propel Pilot Career Path Program | College, company and community pathways with a defined path to a Delta seat |
| Military pathway | A separate route for military pilots |
| Captain | Not offered: command is by internal seniority |
Three phrases decide most applications. Documented: applicants invited to interview must bring documentation of all their flight hours, so total them the way your logbook can prove them. PIC or SIC as defined in 14 CFR 61.159(a)(5): that paragraph of the ATP rule counts “250 hours of flight time in an airplane as a pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of pilot in command while under the supervision of a pilot in command, or any combination thereof”, and those hours must include at least 100 hours of cross-country and 25 hours of night flight time. Preferred: the 1,000 hours of fixed-wing turbine time are a preference, and Delta’s FAQ adds, in its own words, “A minimum of 500 turbine hours must be in a non-powered lift airplane”. Delta does not explain the sentence further, so ask the recruiter how your turbine time counts before you rule yourself in or out.
Delta also asks for a current FAA First Class medical, a minimum age of 23, a high school diploma or GED (a four-year degree is highly preferred but not required), the legal right to work in the US without sponsorship, a current passport or other travel document that allows you to leave and re-enter the US freely, and an FCC Radiotelephone Operator’s Permit. Delta also lists a yellow fever vaccination (the International Certificate of Vaccination, the “Yellow Card”), waived only for legitimate medical or other limited reasons; its postings, as relayed by job boards, ask for it before indoctrination training starts.
What sets Delta apart for a pilot
- Two readers for every application. Delta says each application is reviewed by two members of its Application Review Team, so the application is the first assessment, not a formality.
- A psychological stage. The MMPI-2 personality inventory and a virtual interview with a Delta psychologist are part of the published process, after the panel.
- No simulator in the published steps. The interview stage Delta describes is an online assessment, a panel, a personality inventory and a psychologist’s interview.
- Turbine time preferred, as published. The 1,500 hours, 250 PIC or SIC and 50 multi-engine are minimums; Delta’s FAQ lists the 1,000 turbine hours as a preference.
- First Officer entry only. No external Captain route; command comes by seniority.
- A vaccination on the checklist. Yellow fever, before indoctrination.
The eight published steps
Delta’s pilot hiring FAQ, as we read it in search results, sets out eight steps, from the application to “Take Flight”, and describes the third, the interview stage, in more detail than the others. The selection itself ends with the conditional job offer at the close of step three; the rest turns the offer into a seat. The second column below is preparation advice, not a description of Delta’s format.
| Step | What to prepare |
|---|---|
| 1. Online application | Every hour documented and totalled the way your logbook proves it, your FAA certificates, a current ATP written and an FCC Radiotelephone Operator’s Permit |
| 2. Application review | Two members of the Application Review Team read it: a complete, consistent application with no unexplained gaps |
| 3. Interview stage, ending in a conditional job offer | Timed practice for the Aon online assessment; eight to ten true stories in the STAR structure for the panel in Atlanta; honest, consistent answers for the MMPI-2 and the psychologist; documentation of all flight hours, your FAA certificates, medical certificate and college transcripts |
| 4. Pre-employment screenings | A record that matches what you declared: the screenings Delta lists include a TSA fingerprint-based criminal history records check and a Delta background check, and, as at every US airline, a pre-employment drug test is required |
| 5. Two-week indoctrination | The yellow fever vaccination done before it starts; Delta describes indoctrination as the foundation for its operational policies and an introduction to its culture |
| 6. Wing ceremony | Your Delta wings, with your family and Delta leaders present |
| 7. Training | The FAA-approved initial qualification on your fleet type, in Delta’s Advanced Qualification Program with full-motion simulators: keep your theory and instrument flying sharp |
| 8. Take Flight | The last step Delta lists: flying for Delta |
Two things follow from the order. People read your application before any test, so what you write and what your records show must agree from the first step. And the psychological stage comes after the panel, so a good panel is not the finish line: the MMPI-2 and the psychologist’s interview are part of the same stage.
The Aon online assessment
Delta says competitive candidates begin the interview stage with an Aon online assessment that tests various personality and skill-based competencies. It publishes nothing more. Candidates on pilot forums in 2023 and 2024 reported between four and eight sections, among them spatial orientation, a deductive-logic puzzle, multitasking, an auditory task built on clearance read-backs and a workplace-behaviour questionnaire, and preparation sites still listed similar tasks in 2026. Delta does not confirm any of it, and the reports changed over time, so treat the list as a guide to what to practise, not a syllabus. Practise the skills rather than one product: mental arithmetic without a calculator and spatial and logic tasks against the clock, in short sessions over a few weeks (the Library covers pilot aptitude tests). A questionnaire has no right answers to learn, so answer it quickly and honestly.
Is there a simulator?
Delta’s published interview stage is an online assessment, a panel interview, the MMPI-2 and a psychologist’s interview, with no simulator assessment; the full-motion simulators come in step seven, training. Preparation sites disagreed in 2026, one reporting that recent direct-entry candidates had no simulator evaluation and another still listing one, so plan on the published steps and ask the recruiter if your invitation says otherwise.
The skills a simulator assessment tests still matter, in two places. A panel can ask what you would do in an operational situation, and the answer is the one you would give in a simulator: fly the aircraft, identify the problem, use the other pilot and the checklist, then decide. And once hired, you train on a type you may never have flown, so the habits the Library’s guide to the airline simulator assessment describes, a raw-data scan, briefings, callouts and the engine failure after V1, are the ones your type rating course builds on.
The panel, the MMPI-2 and the psychologist
The panel interview
Delta invites the candidates who succeed in the online assessment to its headquarters in Atlanta for a panel interview, but does not publish its format. A preparation site’s summary of candidate reports, updated in June 2026, describes about an hour with two Delta pilots and a member of HR: an introduction and why Delta, then a mix of behavioural “tell me about a time” questions and “what would you do” scenarios, with no systems questions. Answer with the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result), keep each story short and true, and show ownership rather than blame. Prepare eight to ten stories that cover the common themes, and raise anything in your record yourself, such as a failed check: an interviewer who finds it later will assume it was hidden. The Library sets out the method in competency-based pilot interviews.
Questions particular to Delta
- Why Delta? Three specific reasons that are true for both sides. Not led by pay, and never a criticism of your present employer.
- Your records. You bring documentation of all your flight hours, your certificates, your medical and your college transcripts, so know every figure and every gap before the panel does.
- Your turbine time. If you have less than the preferred 1,000 hours, be ready to explain what your flying has given you that a turbine logbook would.
- A Captain joining as a First Officer. If you command elsewhere, expect to be asked how you will support a Captain who may have less experience than you (the Library covers the authority gradient).
- Which base? Delta lists eight pilot bases. Have a realistic plan for reporting on time from whichever one you are given.
The MMPI-2
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Revision 2, is a long, standardised personality questionnaire of several hundred true-or-false statements, also used to screen candidates in personnel selection; Delta gives it at its headquarters with the panel, and the same 2026 summary of candidate reports has candidates taking the two on the same day. Like any personality questionnaire it looks for consistency and honesty rather than right answers, so answer quickly and truthfully and do not try to describe an imagined ideal pilot (the Library covers the theory in personality and motivation).
The psychologist’s interview
Candidates who succeed in person then have a virtual interview with one of Delta’s psychologists. Delta does not describe its content. Treat it as part of the same assessment as the questionnaire: be consistent with what you answered there and in the panel, and honest about your history.
Technical questions
Delta publishes no technical test, and the 2026 summary of candidate reports describes a panel with no systems questions. Prepare anyway: a “what would you do” scenario is answered with technical knowledge, and candidate reports are not Delta’s word. Start with the rules every US airline pilot is expected to know, then the types Delta flies that v1prep covers: the A220, the A320 family and the 737. If you do not know an answer, say so, then explain what you do know and where you would find the rest.
US rules and operations
- The 1-2-3 rule: when must you file an alternate, and what weather must the alternate forecast? (see alternate aerodromes)
- You lose two-way radio communications in instrument conditions: which route and which altitude do you fly under 14 CFR 91.185? (see radio communication failure)
- What limits your flight time and flight duty period under Part 117, and how much rest must come before a duty period? (see fatigue)
- What are the standard takeoff minimums, how does a Part 121 carrier go lower, and when do you need a takeoff alternate? (see aerodrome operating minima and alternate aerodromes)
A220 and A320 family questions
- The A220 and the A320 are both fly-by-wire with side-sticks: what are the A220’s two control modes, and why do you trim it by hand when the A320 trims itself? (see A220 fly-by-wire flight controls)
- Normal, alternate and direct law on the A320: what takes you from one to the next, and which protections do you lose? (see A320 flight control laws and protections)
737 questions
- Systems A and B and the standby system: what does each power, and how is the aircraft flown if A and B are both lost? (see the 737 hydraulic system)
- What do the two STAB TRIM cutout switches do, and what are the runaway stabiliser recall items? (see pitch control and stabiliser trim)
Theory worth refreshing
- V1, VR and V2, and what V1 commits you to (see takeoff speeds)
- The go-around: thrust, attitude, flap and gear, and who may call it (see go-around and missed approach)
- Windshear and microbursts: the signs, and the escape manoeuvre (see windshear and microbursts)
- Wet and contaminated runways and what they do to performance (see wet and contaminated runways)

Where Delta candidates go wrong
- Hours that do not survive the documents. Delta asks interviewees to bring documentation of all their flight hours; totals that differ from the logbook undo everything else.
- Reading “preferred” as “required”, or the reverse. Delta lists the 1,000 turbine hours as preferred; the 1,500 total, 250 PIC or SIC and 50 multi-engine are published as minimums.
- Arriving cold at the online assessment. It opens the interview stage, so a weak result ends the application before anyone has met you.
- Treating the panel as the finish line. The MMPI-2 and the psychologist’s interview come after it, in the same stage.
- Answering the questionnaire as an ideal pilot. Personality inventories look for consistency; an imagined profile produces exactly the inconsistency they detect.
- Stories that do not survive a follow-up question. Keep them true, specific and your own.
- Paperwork left late. A current ATP written, the FCC permit, a passport or travel document that lets you leave and re-enter the US freely, and the yellow fever vaccination before indoctrination.
- Forgetting that the offer is conditional. The pre-employment screenings compare what you declared with what the records show, and across the industry that gap is the commonest reason an offer is withdrawn.
From application to a class date
Delta publishes no timings except the length of indoctrination. What is known:
| Phase | What is known |
|---|---|
| Application | Continuous, with no closing date, at the last check on 13 October 2026 |
| Review | Two members of the Application Review Team read each application |
| Interview stage | The online assessment, then the panel and the MMPI-2 in Atlanta, then a virtual interview with a psychologist |
| Conditional job offer | At the end of the interview stage, followed by the pre-employment screenings |
| Indoctrination | Two weeks; the yellow fever vaccination is needed before it starts |
| Wing ceremony, training, Take Flight | In that order after indoctrination; the length of training is not published |
| Class date | Not published |
Plan for a range, not a date. The timelines preparation and industry sites quote for the whole process vary widely and none comes from Delta, so keep your ATP written current, your medical valid and your theory sharp while you wait.
Delta pilot hiring: common questions
The hours, licence, medical and right-to-work rules are on our Delta Air Lines pilot requirements page; the questions below are about the selection itself.
What is the Delta pilot hiring process?
Delta sets out eight steps: an online application; a review by two members of its Application Review Team; the interview stage, made up of the Aon online assessment, a panel interview and the MMPI-2 at its Atlanta headquarters, and a virtual interview with a Delta psychologist, which ends in a conditional job offer; pre-employment screenings; a two-week indoctrination; a wing ceremony; training; and “Take Flight”, the start of flying for Delta.
What is the Delta Aon assessment?
The first part of Delta’s interview stage: an online assessment from Aon that, in Delta’s words, tests various personality and skill-based competencies. Candidates on pilot forums in 2023 and 2024 reported spatial orientation, logic, multitasking and auditory tasks and a workplace-behaviour questionnaire; Delta does not confirm the content. Practise timed reasoning tasks, and answer the questionnaire quickly and honestly.
What happens at the Delta pilot interview in Atlanta?
Candidates who pass the online assessment are invited to Delta’s headquarters for a panel interview and the MMPI-2 personality inventory. Delta does not publish the panel’s format; a preparation site’s summary of candidate reports (June 2026) describes about an hour with two Delta pilots and a member of HR, with “tell me about a time” and “what would you do” questions, best answered in the STAR structure. Successful candidates then have a virtual interview with a Delta psychologist.
Does Delta have a simulator assessment?
Not in the steps Delta publishes, which run from the online assessment to the panel, the MMPI-2 and the psychologist’s interview. Preparation sites disagreed about it in 2026, so ask the recruiter if your invitation mentions one. Delta trains new hires on their fleet type, so the simulator comes in training, the seventh of its published steps.
Does Delta hire Captains from outside?
No. Delta publishes no external Captain route: command comes from its own First Officers by seniority, so experienced Captains join as First Officers, through the same selection.
