Air Canada Pilot Requirements 2026: Hours, Licence and Hiring Process
Air Canada asks for 2,000 fixed-wing hours, a Canadian ATPL with a current Group 1 instrument rating, a Transport Canada Category 1 medical with its own visual-acuity standard, schooling to university entrance level, and Canadian citizenship or permanent residence — and says openly that applications exceed vacancies, listing post-secondary and aviation education, commercial or military flying and jet or glass-cockpit time as desirable. Jazz Aviation is its preferential feeder. New hires start as First Officers on domestic types or as Relief Pilots on long-haul. No external Captains.
Always confirm on the airline’s own careers page before applying. Every figure here is what the airline published at the date shown against it on our jobs board; entries marked Unconfirmed are ones whose requirements we found but whose current vacancy status we could not establish from the airline’s own pages. Vacancies open and close without notice.

Bases and fleet
Bases: Montreal · Toronto · Vancouver · Calgary
Fleet: A220 · A320 family · A330 · B737 MAX · B777 · B787
How to prepare
New hires go to the A220, A320 family or 737 MAX domestically, or fly relief on the 777, 787 and A330. The A320 and B737 banks cover the two narrow-body families and the ATPL theory banks the technical interview; bilingual French/English is an asset and worth showing. The process is screening against the published minimums, an interview and a simulator evaluation.
Then read the complete airline pilot interview guide for the HR and competency stages, and check Air Canada’s entry on the jobs board for the latest status.
