Cathay Pacific Pilot Interview Prep: Stages, Sim, Questions (2026 Guide)
LAST UPDATED: 11 OCTOBER 2026
Cathay Pacific is a rare airline with three published doors for pilots: a sponsored Cadet Pilot Programme that takes applications all year, Direct Entry Second Officer from more than 250 hours and Direct Entry First Officer from 1,500 hours. Every new Second and First Officer is based in Hong Kong, and the assessment stage takes place at Cathay City, where candidates describe a simulator on a type assigned about seven days before. This guide covers the routes, each stage as candidates describe it, the technical ground a broad interview covers and how to prepare. The detail of each stage comes from candidate reports, which are labelled as such.
Note for narrow-body pilots: the First Officer advert says a new First Officer may be placed on the A321neo, A330, A350, 777 or 747 freighter, and most placements are wide-body. No type rating is needed beforehand, because Cathay provides it, so the preparation that pays is ATPL theory, navigation in particular, and the brief you are sent for the simulator.
About Cathay Pacific
The Cathay group had 235 aircraft at 30 June 2026, with 105 more on firm order (2026 Interim Results). Cathay Pacific itself flies the A321neo, A330, A350 and 777; Cathay Cargo flies 747 freighters, HK Express the A320neo family and Air Hong Kong A330 freighters. A Direct Entry First Officer may be placed on any of the Cathay Pacific types or the 747 freighter.
The job is in Hong Kong: all new Second and First Officers are based there, and the careers FAQ describes relocation assistance for joiners from overseas. How work visas are handled is not confirmed, so ask recruitment. You fly on a Hong Kong licence, converted by the Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) after you join.
Cathay was hiring at the last check. In May 2026 it said it planned to hire about 3,000 staff during the year, cadet pilots among them, and search results on 21 September 2026 showed live postings for the Direct Entry First Officer role and the Cadet Pilot Programme. Its careers pages advertise no direct-entry command: command is internal, and experienced pilots join as First Officers.
Three entry routes
| Route | Published minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cadet Pilot Programme | No flying hours | Sponsored, about 80 weeks, with ground school in Hong Kong and flying in the US or Australia; applications open year-round, and open to Mainland applicants since 2023 |
| Direct Entry Second Officer | ICAO CPL (some versions ask for a CPL with MEIR) and more than 250 h in specified categories | Reported in 2023 as a 31-week programme at Flight Training Adelaide, including the Hong Kong ATPL subjects; whether the route is open now is not confirmed |
| Direct Entry First Officer | ICAO ATPL, or CPL with MEIR and same-state ATPL examination credits obtained without exemption or conversion; 1,500 h total, including multi-crew transport time and 500 h of command, of which up to 250 h may be P1 U/S | Versions of the advert disagree on which aircraft count, so read the live advert; placement on the A321neo, A330, A350, 777 or 747 freighter |
| Captain | Not offered | Command is internal |
The medical is a Class 1, with a pre-employment medical to the HKCAD Class 1 standard, and the English requirement is ICAO Level 4 or above. The pre-employment stage adds a drug test under HKCAD psychoactive-substance guidance and a background check. The Second Officer advert, as indexed, also asks for secondary school with maths and science, a degree, or all ATPL passes. P1 U/S is command time flown under supervision.
What sets Cathay apart for a pilot
- Three doors, one base. The cadet, Second Officer and First Officer routes all lead to Hong Kong, and no direct-entry command is advertised.
- You do not choose your type. A First Officer may be placed on any of five types, freighters included, and most placements are wide-body.
- Years in the cruise seat. Second Officers spend years as cruise relief on the wide-body fleets.
- A Hong Kong licence. You fly on a Hong Kong licence converted by HKCAD after joining, and the Second Officer course was reported in 2023 to include the Hong Kong ATPL subjects.
- The type rating is provided. No rating is needed to apply. Probation and bond terms are not confirmed, including for the sponsored cadet course, so ask before you sign.
- Strict pre-employment checks. A medical to the HKCAD Class 1 standard, a psychoactive-substance test and a background check come after the assessment.
The selection stages
Candidates and preparation providers fill in the detail of each stage, and their reports are kept in a column of their own.
| Stage | What it involves | Commonly reported |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Online application | Through the careers portal, with documents and logbook totals | |
| 2. Online assessments | Psychometric tests including abstract reasoning and an instrument-orientation task, sometimes an online technical test | Preparation providers link the tests to Aon (cut-e) |
| 3. Online interview | An online interview | An HR-led video call of 25 to 40 minutes |
| 4. Assessment at Cathay City, Hong Kong | A simulator assessment, and an interview and document check mixing technical and HR questions | The simulator type assigned about seven days before, the A330 often mentioned; a group exercise is not confirmed for the current campaign |
| 5. Pre-employment checks | A medical to the HKCAD Class 1 standard, a drug test and background checks | |
| 6. Offer |
We found nothing published on how the stages are scored, but the shape tells you something: the online tests and the video call are remote filters you pass alone, so they reward practice in the conditions you will sit them in, and Cathay City is where your flying, your technical knowledge and your documents are all checked.
The simulator at Cathay City
The simulator profile comes from candidate reports: a session on a type assigned about seven days before, with the A330 often mentioned. That makes the brief you receive your syllabus: learn its profile, its calls, its speeds and its settings until you could fly it from memory, rather than trying to learn the whole type.
How to use the week
- First, the paper. Read the brief twice and write out the profile, the callouts and every pitch attitude and thrust setting it gives. Where it gives none, plan to ask for them before you start.
- Then, out loud. Chair-fly it: the departure, the approach and the go-around, with the calls, until you no longer need the paper.
- Last, the hands. If you can get time in any fixed-base trainer, fly raw-data approaches and go-arounds; if not, keep chair-flying and arrive rested.
If the type is bigger than anything you have flown
Most Cathay placements are wide-body, and the simulator may be one too. Fly attitude and thrust, make small inputs early and let the aircraft settle. Assessors in airline simulator evaluations look at instrument scan, procedures, callouts and crew cooperation, and at how you cope with an unfamiliar aircraft, not at perfection: brief every approach as an airline crew would, and use whoever is in the other seat.
The video call and the panel
The first conversation is the online interview, reported as an HR-led video call of 25 to 40 minutes. Treat it as a full interview: a quiet room, a headset, the camera at eye level, dressed as you would be in person, and answers kept short and to the point. The interview at Cathay City then mixes technical and HR questions, alongside a check of your documents.
Competency questions
Expect behavioural questions that ask for a real event: a mistake, a disagreement with a Captain, an unsafe situation, a decision on incomplete information. Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result), keep each story short and true, and show ownership rather than blame. Prepare eight to ten stories, and raise anything difficult in your record yourself before the panel finds it.
Questions particular to Cathay
- Why Cathay, and why Hong Kong? Every new pilot is based there. Show that you have thought about living there, with your family if you have one, and ask what the relocation assistance covers.
- Any type, freighters included. A First Officer may be placed on the A321neo, A330, A350, 777 or 747 freighter. Say plainly that you would accept the type offered, and how you would learn it.
- The Second Officer years. For Second Officer candidates: years as cruise relief on the wide-body fleets. Why does that suit you, and how will you keep your handling skills?
- Command from inside. No direct-entry command is advertised, so experienced pilots join as First Officers. Show that you have accepted that.
- Your documents. The document check sits alongside the interview: your logbook totals must match your application, and your multi-crew and command time must be laid out the way the advert counts it.
Technical questions
Candidates describe a broad technical interview, and the online assessments sometimes add an online technical test. Older reports stress navigation theory: inertial navigation, GNSS and Schuler tuning. With most placements on wide-bodies and no type rating needed beforehand, ATPL theory is the core of the preparation; the Hong Kong ATPL subjects in the Second Officer course are standard ICAO theory.
Navigation questions to practise
- How does an inertial reference system know where it is, and why does its position drift with time? (see the inertial navigation system)
- What is Schuler tuning, and what would an untuned platform do? (same article)
- What does IRS alignment need, and how does latitude affect it? (see IRS alignment and modes)
- How does a GNSS receiver fix its position, and what do RAIM and fault detection and exclusion protect you from? (see GNSS integrity and RAIM)
- How does the FMS combine inertial, GNSS and radio positions? (see FMS navigation and position updating, and test yourself on our ATPL general navigation questions)
The rest of the ATPL, and the fleet
For a wide-body placement, the long-haul topics are worth refreshing too: ETOPS, maximum altitude and buffet boundaries, and sleep and circadian rhythms for the cruise relief years. What v1prep has for each type a First Officer may be placed on:
| Cathay type | In v1prep |
|---|---|
| A321neo | The A320 bank and the A320ceo to neo course, including its A321neo page |
| A330, A350, 777, 747 freighter | No type bank: the ATPL banks, and the Library’s navigation and long-haul articles |
Where Cathay candidates go wrong
- Treating the video call as a formality. The HR-led online interview is reported as 25 to 40 minutes: long enough for weak preparation to show.
- Wasting the week before the simulator. The type is reported to be assigned about seven days ahead, and the brief is your syllabus. Arriving without it learned is a choice.
- Rusty navigation theory. Older reports stress inertial navigation, GNSS and Schuler tuning, exactly the theory that years of line flying with a working FMS let you forget.
- Hours that do not fit the advert. Versions of the First Officer advert disagree on which aircraft count. Work from the live advert and lay out your multi-crew and command time to match it.
- Treating Hong Kong as a detail. Every new pilot is based there, and visa arrangements are not confirmed; an applicant who has not researched the move reads as a risk.
- Wanting one type. A placement can be any of five types, the 747 freighter included. Insisting on one reads as inflexibility.
From application to Hong Kong
We found no published selection timelines. What is known:
| Phase | Published or reported |
|---|---|
| Application to first reply | Recent PPRuNe posters report quick replies to A321neo campaigns |
| Reply to interview | About three weeks, in the same reports |
| Simulator type | Assigned about seven days before the session (reported) |
| Second Officer course | 31 weeks at Flight Training Adelaide, including the Hong Kong ATPL subjects (reported in 2023) |
| Cadet Pilot Programme | About 80 weeks: ground school in Hong Kong, flying in the US or Australia |
| Probation and bond | Not confirmed: ask before you sign |
If replies come as quickly as recent reports suggest, the time to sharpen your navigation theory and settle the conversation about moving to Hong Kong is before you apply, not after the invitation arrives.
Cathay Pacific pilot recruitment: common questions
What is the Cathay Pacific pilot selection process?
An online application with documents and logbook totals, then online assessments: psychometric tests including abstract reasoning and an instrument-orientation task, and sometimes an online technical test. Next comes an online interview, reported as an HR-led video call of 25 to 40 minutes. The assessment at Cathay City in Hong Kong combines a simulator assessment, on a type candidates say is assigned about seven days before, with an interview and document check mixing technical and HR questions. A pre-employment medical to the HKCAD Class 1 standard, a drug test and background checks come before the offer.
How many hours do you need to join Cathay Pacific?
Direct Entry First Officer asks for 1,500 hours total, including multi-crew transport time and 500 hours of command, of which up to 250 may be P1 U/S; versions of the advert disagree on which aircraft count, so read the live one. Direct Entry Second Officer asks for an ICAO CPL with more than 250 hours in specified categories, and the Cadet Pilot Programme needs no flying hours.
Do I need a type rating to join Cathay Pacific?
No. The type rating is provided. A Direct Entry First Officer may be placed on the A321neo, A330, A350, 777 or 747 freighter, and most placements are wide-body.
Where are Cathay Pacific pilots based?
All new Second and First Officers are based in Hong Kong, and the careers FAQ describes relocation assistance for joiners from overseas. How work visas are handled is not confirmed, so ask recruitment. You fly on a Hong Kong licence, converted by HKCAD after you join.
Does Cathay Pacific hire direct entry Captains?
No. Its careers pages advertise no direct-entry command: command is internal, and experienced pilots join as First Officers.
